Perhentian Islands are pretty far in the north east coast, but it's highly recommended. I just did a quick check on AirAsia for Kuala Lumpur - Kota Bharu and guess what? There are still many flights, especially the return leg, that is MYR 0 (yes, zero!) from its current promo. And as expected, it excludes the airport taxes and other charges though, which isn't much. But even after these charges, it's still less than MYR100 for a return ticket. If you already know what dates you'll be there in KL, go ahead and book the flight tickets now.

And April is a nice time to go there as the north east monsoon has just ended the previous month.

How about Pulau Pangkor, it's about a 4 hours bus journey from KL and about 40 minutes ferry ride. It's a small island, nice beaches and reasonably cheap accommodation and food. It's a nice little getaway and close to KL if you are returning to meet your friend.

The only thing I would factor in about flying anywhere, it may be a short flight but it takes about an hour and a half to get to the airport from KL centre (if you were going to stay in KL when you first arrived) so if you combine this with check in time plus the bus/taxi journey from Kota Bharu to the port and then the ferry ride it might end up a longer journey than you expect! This is something we have done in other parts of Asia and been shocked that a 40 minute flight has turned into 10 hours travelling time!!

Regarding your questions about Penang and Langkawi...Langkawi is definitely the choice of the two for beaches, it is quite quiet but the beach is gorgeous, you can also hire a bike/car and drive around the island very easily on a sightseeing trip. Also, Langkawi is duty free, so alcohol and more importantly chocolate is very cheap there! Accommodation isn't an unreasonable price. We were there in May last year and there were not many people there at all.

Penang is more of a city place. We stayed in Georgetown as we heard the beaches weren't all that nice and didn't have cheap accommodation. Lots of places of historical interest on Penang and the best Indian food we have had so far in SE Asia!

thank you all for your information, just when I think I have made up my mind I keep changing it!! haha now i'm confused.

Time to run it by the rest of my friends and see where they like, but I think Perhentian Islands or Langwaki will do it. The duty free beer at Langwaki is certainly an attraction but the Perhentian Islands just look beautiful and hard to pass up.

Perhentian Islands is supposed to be setup better for younger backpackers by the look of so may fit the bill better.

Thanks again

the nearest airport to the Perhentian Islands would be Kota Bahru, which Air Asia may fly to. Otherwise, a good way to travel up the country is on the jungle train to Kota Bahru from KL. It takes a day and is worth it for the scenery you travel through en route. From Kota Bahru you can then get a taxi to the port to get the boat to the islands.

You also can travel to Redang Island ,Kapas island,Gemia Island and Tenggol island...normally April its best time to travel at East Coast of Malaysia....welcome to Malaysia...

well the more i dig the more confused I get.

I have been doing more research on the Perhentian Islands and now I'm getting a bit confused which Island to chose. Ideally we would like somewhere with a bit of nightlife or at least somewhere we can go for a drink at night. Any ideas?

They're actually the same airport. The Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) is the budget airline terminal which serves mainly AirAsia flights at the moment. There's a bus service linking both the Main Terminal Building (MTB) and the LCCT. It takes up to 30 minutes (including waiting time) to get from one terminal to the other. Check out the Kuala Lumpur International Airport guide for more information.

Penang - historical island/ city with an amazing view of the city from Penang hills (best at night). not much of a beach destination though. few bars and nightclubs in city

on the other hand Langkawi is a lot quieter with a few hostels and some nice beaches. best way to get a round is by car or bike. the main stretch has a few restaurants, cant remember seeing any bars

if you want to stay in Malaysia i would recommend combining both cities, maybe spend a few days in each city! fly to penang then catch the boat there and back to Langkawi. on the way back if you catch the boat half an hour before sun set you will see one of the most amazing sunsets ever!! very romantic!!

travelling in south east asia is very easy, short and cheap so if you're looking for a good beach holiday with a few good bars... then i would recommend Krabi! you might want to save thailand until your mate gets there but trust me there is loads of other islands you can catch with them.. kl to karbi maybe 1 hour!

south east asia is amazing part of the world and I just cant get enough!! Enjoy your planning – I am currently finalising my return in 3 weeks. Cant wait

Redang Island is the right choice for you. There have a nightlife and open disco until 12.00 midnight at Long Beach like Redang Beach Resort ,Redang Holiday and Redang Pelangi..For Laguna Redang they have indoor disco..For you information,Monsoon season already started from November till February next year. The best month to visit around March till October.
