I just joined this site tonight.
Here's the thing: -
I've been aimlessly drifting through life for the last few years. I've wanted to travel for some time, but keep getting lazy and putting it off. I've been to New Zealand twice to visit my sister and I loved it.
I have a major bug in me to see the world. Everything. Big cities and deserted villages. The highways of California and the dirt roads off Mongolia. The MacGregor/Boorman thing. But I keep getting myself into a rut with dull jobs that drag me down. And in two days I leave my current place of employment for the last time. My boss - a somewhat unstable businessman has to his credit given me the last two months to find a job that better suits me. But there is a job famine here. I know I can get myself another job soon enough, but it will not be walking into that rut again.
I am determined to see the world. This time I mean it. Whatever job I get it will be to serve one purpose. To finance the Great Adventure.
But I don't want to do it alone.
Of all the people I know there are very few I would travel with.
With the exception of my sister in NZ - who has a great spirit for adventure and would do this with me except right now she needs to focus on her future career - my whole family is settled down with kids.
Of the four friends I would do this with - two are couple with a mortgage and a dog, the eternal bachelor has been wedlocked by his nemesis and the other guy would just collapse from the drink at the first hurdle.
So here is my plan. To gather a group together from all walks of life, from all over the world with different personalities and cultures, at different stages in their lives who have one thing in common. They want to travel in a rickety old van and see the world with a new group of friends.
I've come to this site looking for help in finding people like that.
What do I do? How do I find them? Are you reading this and wanting the some thing?
Please contact me with advice, information or an "I want in".
Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon.
A 'rickety old van', hmm? You are adventurous. Where do you want to start? I mean, which continent? I've always dreamed of doing a great transcontinental trip, such as "Cape to Cairo" (South Africa to Egypt) or Alaska to the southern tip of South America. I did the Trans-Siberian trip a couple years ago, and that was fun, but that was by train.
I'd love to hear more about your plans, although I probably won't be able to join you- I won't be able to travel until the summer, unfortunately.
Hey, I'd be interested in joining you. When are you planning to start? I'm currently saving for a trip through Oz in August '09 ...But I'd be willing to change my plans depending what you have going on. I see what you are going for and it sounds like an excellent plan to me
I'm a 25 year old male from the maritime provinces of Canada. I've backpacked across the United States and hopped freight trains through Canada and am looking for a new adventure overseas.
Keep me posted on what you're up to ...I'd love to be a part of a group after the same experiences
i would love to join this if only am able to finance this trip!! please let me know if the group will also work everywhere they go to gather finance as they do their trip. if u plan travel in india i would love to be part of that whenever and wherever i can. it would be a pleasure if i can be of help to you in this adventure as i love adventure in travel.
Start saving your money whenever you can. We could have lots of time to save a small chunk of money. But as for me, I would also like to work occasionally as I travel to fund more adventures. Nothing too serious for work though. Ha
26 year old female here who LOVES to travel. I'm waiting to see if a couple job applications turn into anything, but if not then I totally want in. My plan B this year was to travel anyway. I was originally planning on going to Australia where I could travel around, stay in youth hostels, and with a working holiday visa work occassionally if need be. But I'm flexible and there are many other places I'd love to go. Plus, if anyone has any interest in a pit stop in Japan, I used to live there and would love to show some new people my favorite bars and restaurants.
Your plan sounds swell... OZ is where I want to go as well.. and Japan and SE Asia really. Everywhere until my money dries up. It would be awesome if this organizing a group thing he is trying here actually works out eh
Yeah, I would love for this to actually work out. I'll know by about the 2nd week of January whether I'll be getting a real job this year or not. If not, then expect me to be incredibly proactive about getting something going travel-wise. The good thing about Australia is I know that they cater to backpackers, both with offering places to stay and with temporary jobs (it's always good to have money, yeah?).
But anyway, just wanted to post so no one forgets about me here! Haha!
well for my benefit of gaining a travel partner, i hope the job thing doesn't work out. ha ha
but definitely keep everything in mind
Thanks for your reply. I was out of action for 2 reasons -
1. depressed over the tragic attacks on mumbai
2. had a fall and hurt my ankle(no fracture luckily) - now am much better
if you could post a rough plan and post the budget needed for a budget trip that would be of great help and to check for oneself if one can participate or not. i had travelled in europe and have visited spain, italy, france, germany, austria, switzerland (just a few cities in each country). so if europe is not in the itinerary it is fine. Not to be selfish, i dont mind visiting these places again too! some places are fun to visit any time.
i would love to visit the following places (just a long-time desire).
lots of places !
south america :
argentina(am a tango dancer), chile (Che gauvera land), puerto rico, colombia(am a salsa dancer too), brazil(should manage to go during the carnival time!)
cuba (the place itself, cigars, salsa, etc) , and any other possible country nearby
iceland or any scandinavian country ( just to get a close feel of the arctic)
Czech(Prague), bulgaria(sofia) any other east-european country nearby
greece, turkey(if possible)
egypt(a must for pyramids), south africa,...
russia(moscow, stalingrad, st.petersburg), china(beijing, hongkong, singapore), japan(tokyo), thailand, malaysia, tibet, indonesia
all these places might take a year or more. dont know about the visa process for each country. any possibility of making money on the way, etc,
now all through wherever possible would love to hire a motorcycle
well this is perhaps a dream list. you can suggest a feasible list and average budget for a budget travel.
or may be you can state your concrete plans
