Hey, I've been over in oz for a couple years but now my time has offically finished and i have to leave!! :( I'm just gonna head to the closest place (NZ) for the next year or so.

Am currently trying to get everything as sorted as possible so i don't have any dramas to come but a bit stumped on which bank account to go with!! I really want a cheap national account, thats not gonna charge me for taking out of ANY atm (which i know is near impossible to find this side of the world) but my main problem is that i travel about abit so book flights and things online using my visa debit card......is there any bank in NZ that have a visa debit card??!!

I have just got one myself :)

Thanks!! Are they the only one??!! So crazy that it doesn't seem to be an option in NZ!!!

I'm not sure but I haven't heard of any other banks here offering them. It is crazy that the debit cards here don't work like switch/maestro in the uk, as people have no other choice but using credit cards when shopping online etc. So I wouldn't be surprised if the other banks catch on sooner or later.

Westpac were advertising them on TV just before I went overeas a couple of months ago, so it was perfect for me, although not so good spending $NZ in clothes shops in the UK!

Westpac is the only NZ bank that offers a Visa debit card. All the other banks, however, have eftpos cards which work exactly the same way for point-of-sale transactions. All the banks charge you - now $1 a shot - if you use the ATM of another bank so it may pay to choose a bank with a wide spread of branches and ATMs. I bank with Westpac (because I wanted a Visa debit) and their spread of machines isn't too bad.

For the first month in Australia I went round using my Citibank card mostly in ANZ and Commonwealth ATMs (I only managed to find 2 Citibank ATMs in the whole of Sydney) and managed to acquire myself a nice $35 in withdrawal fees.

We are lucky in the UK because we can get cash out from whatever bank we like, but this is not the case in Australia or New Zealand.

Maybe a cash back option from EFTPOS transactions are an option, can anyone advise?

The option of cash back (or 'cash out' as they call it here) is widely available in New Zealand for no extra charge.

Hey thats exactly what i did when I first arrived!! I managed to be hit with over $60 worth of fees for 1 month!! Citibank is not the best bank to go with - in fact i'd honestly say they are rubbish!! Plus i only ever found citibank in Sydney so had no choice but to use any ATM. I changed pretty sharpish!!

I went with NAB cos they had the visa debit option at the time. But the best way I found to get around the stupid charges and not have to go ATM hunting is to get an all inclusive account. A few of the banks do it..it still means you get fees but it's a set amount for the month. The one I have is the gold debit card and I pay about $14 a month but can spend as often as i like, how I like and take out of ANY atm without getting more charges.

This is what i really want in NZ but it doesn't seem to be an option!! Oh how I miss british banks!!!

Sorry I meant to say £35!

Citibank are crap, I got conned into the STA Travel/Citibank promotion a few years ago, but having been to Aus I would never use them again.

If I go back I will definitley use ANZ although I still think Aussies and Kiwis get totally screwed on bank charges.
