I know this is only out of innocence, or misinformation, but it is really annoying to people who live in San Fransisco when travellers go there and are calling it "San Fran." Either call it San Fransisco, its real name, or if you really want a nickname (and find it hard to type out, "San Fransisco") then call it "The City."
I just thought I would fill you all in.
Have a good trip.
I remember a 'cop show' where they decided a murder suspect wasn't actually from San Francisco like he'd said, because he called it 'Frisco' and locals wouldn't do that! I guess that's true?
now how am i to tell the difference from tourists????
I don't think it's annoying if someone mentions "san fran" or"cisco". It' just people trying to blend in. If u are from N.cal and u are visiting s.cal... u say "hella". Everyone knows u are from N.cal. People in s. cal hate that word! It's a region thing. I wouldn't expect a tourist to say "the city" or the "bay". Unless u are from here.
You know, I have lived in California for over 40 years, the last six of which I have been living in Northern California (Silicon Valley area). And in all those years, I have had exactly two people (both of whom made the comment over 20 years ago) tell me to stop calling it San Fran and call it "The City"--oh wait, I guess you make #3.
My suggestion is to mellow out and show people in the rest of the world that the people in San Francisco (and California) are laid back, relaxed, and not so worried about nit-picky things that it will ruin their day.
P.S. While I love San Francisco and go there at least once a month, it is not the largest city in California in population (Los Angeles is), not the second largest (San Diego is), not the third largest (Sacramento is), and not the fourth largest (San Jose is)--so people who want it to be called "The City" strike me as people with a bit of an elitist, ego problem. Also, if you want to correct people's naming of San Francisco you should have least have spelled it properly--which you failed to do twice in your post.
Just my two cents.
I just heard this from some artist who sells some of her art around the world, and travels around the world buying and selling art, so please excuse me if I was portraying her bias . .. . . She seemed to be very annoyed when she told me this, so I took it seriously. But, honestly, I live in Calgary, and if tourists and backpackers walked up to me on the roads in Airdrie, a suburb north of Calgary, and asked me how to get to "Cal" I would be pretty annoyed, know what I'm saying, so it sounded like a legitimate complaint coming from some local in San Francisco.
I apologise, also, for the spelling mistake I feel sheepish.
So tell me how do I get to "Cal" from Airdrie???? :-p
