I have never been a good language student. I was wondering what each of you have done to learn languages for travel and what you've found most useful. If you think of anything good, I might even go and try it!

In refreshing my Italian and learning Spanish - in addition to courses - I loaded Pimsleur language CD's on my i-pod and practiced the lessons whenever the opportunity lent itself.

I write down phrases and words that I know I will be using. A lot of the phrase books you buy have unnecessary phrases in it that no-one will ever use, so go through a phrase book and take the best phrases out, write them down and you just have to keep going through them. There is no easy way to learn a new language. I have a degree in french but I am of course always still learning french. It is a lifelong undertaking to learn new languages. BUT although time consuming, it is very rewarding.

I leave a phrase book in my toilet.... It works, I promise!
