Flying out of India, heading to Auckland and arriving @ 11:00 p.m. on Dec. 2. Please send any suggestions you would have for places to stay (preferably low-cost, but SAFE!).
Many, many thanks!

I would recommend staying in one of the suburbs such as Ponsonby, Parnell or Mt Eden. All are nice, leafy suburbs close to the city. In Parnell I stayed at Aloe Tree backpackers which was a very homely little place. In Ponsonby, there is Brown Kiwi and Ponsonby backpackers which are supposed to be ok. If you do stay in the city, Auckland Central Backpackers (ACB) is normally a good, safe choice and it's right in the centre. There are also 2 YHA hostels in central Auckland, both of which are very good, if you prefer somewhere a little less party - orientated. |

Also as you are arriving late, (and Auckland airport is quite a way out of town so it will take you a while) make sure you notify the hostel, as not all of them have receptions which stay open 24 hours. ACB does as far as I know but not sure about the others. [ Edit: Edited on Nov 30, 2008, at 7:34 PM by bex76 ] |

Oh, thanks so much for the info, bex76.... very helpful, indeed. Not knowing what else to do, I went ahead and booked a hotel room for my friend shortly after sending that post ( ~~I was inquiring for my friend who is flying from India to Auckland~~), knowing she could use certainty and a good night's sleep after the long flight. I know she'll be looking for hostels the following day, though, so she'll be able to sign in and put this info to very good use. You all are the best!! Thanks again for your help, Mary |
