Phuket is perfectly safe. All the main protests are located in Bangkok, but even there - unless you go out looking for the possibility of trouble (like sleeping in Bangkok airport at night with the demonstrators) you aren't gonna see a thing!

The protesters in Thailand only want justice and a decent government - I support them 100%. Thailand is quite safe, the government has been overthrown now, and we will now see things getting back to normal. Those that equate the violence in India with that in Thailand are wrong to think this way. Yes, I realize there is a different problem in the Thai/Malaysia border area, but for the most part, I believe Thailand to be very safe. I'll be there in Feb.

I am heading to Thailand in January and all though I am a little worried about the airport situation I still feel it is safe. Of course if someone goes looking for trouble they will find it. Just know the the Thai people are very friendly and that the country, now more than ever, needs tourism. So long as your respectful you should be fine.

good luck and have fun

I think it's more than safe...have been there in the last couple of months when this round of troubles first started and just been joined by a friend who flew out of Phuket two days ago.

yea...until the next time. It's just a fact that Thailand is volatile, but not in a way that typically effects travelers (ok the last couple of weeks have made things difficult I agree).
