Need help finding information on the best (economical and safe) way to travel from Merida (or Cancun) to Antigua, Guatemala. Anyone have specific information on bus lines/routes, etc.? I've looked into flying and it's a bit pricey for me.

Cheers!

I'm doing the same journey between the 8th and the 15th of March!
If by bus it looks like i've got two choices go through mexico which looks like the long way round, or through Belize which might turn out to be more complicated.

I think this guy peter has done the journey before but from his blog its quite difficult to tell how he's done it.
anyway here's the link

Merida is a beautiful town. Go to the bus station near the government buildings. Get a bus for the town of Chetumal.

Walk through the border nonsense. On the other side, you will be happy to hear laid back Caribbean style English spoken your way. They will take you into the town of Corozal, a nice short ride. Then you can work out whether the bus you are on is going to Flores, or you need another one. Take that bus and then go to Guatemala.

It's a well worn path. Once you are out of the Spanish of Mexico, it's easy to ask the questions. Corozal has buses that go right to Flores. After that, you'll have to switch for other destinations.

You CAN take a bus to Punta Gorda and then hop a ferry to Guat, I think at Rio Dulce, but more arduous, really.

Good luck out there

Oh yeah GLOT
