I am leaving the uk on the 19th dec for KL
If you really only have the time that you mentioned, than I think you're only option would be to fly. You'll be surprised how long it takes to get places overland. From KL it'll take a good part of 24 hours to get to Bangkok. From Bangkok to Siem Reap (Angkor) it takes most of a day. Again, from Siem Reap to Phnom Pehn is a good chunk of a day. I've never gone to Laos via Cambodia so I don't know exactly how long it takes, but I can't imagine it will be quick. You are probably looking at a couple days to get to Vientiane. So if time is limited, it sounds like you might be trying to do too much. Either fly between countries, or limit the amount of places that you go.
Okay taking what you’ve said into consideration I have decided to cross Cambodia off my itinerary this year and concentrate on laos!
Revised rough plan kl – Vientiane, visit Luang Prabang and roam around a bit then head down to Chiang Mai
Any recommendation for Laos and what is the best way to cross over to Chiang Mai?
From Vientiane, first take the bus up to Vang Viang which is one of the prettiest places in the S-E Asia region - about 3 hours. Stat there a night then take the bus up to Luang Prabang (about 4 hours).
From Luang Prabang there is a boat to Chiang Mai province. However, it is a two day ride sat in a long-tail boat for the entirity of the day. I've heard from friends that the trip is not comfortable at all!
Better you fly from Vientiane to Chiang Mai - Laos Airlines do the route cheap.
i'd say your probably best going from bangkok to chang mai, then getting the boat from there to luang prabang in laos. i didn't use the boat myself, having come into laos from cambodia, but i heard it's a bit hairy! from luang prabang get the bus to vang vieng, maybe go tubing there if that's your bag, i thought it was great but it's far from a cultural experience! the bus from lp to vv is not the best, takes about 8 hours along winding mountain roads, lots of people on our bus got sick! from vv its about 4 hours to vientiane, which i personally didn't think much of. from there (or just the other side of the thai border actually, but its very close) you can get a train back to bangkok. hope this helps. cheers.
