Hey folks,

Whats the best way to get to Kathmandu from either Dehli or Varanasi? I hear flights are easiest but may cost....I hear bus is cheap but a tough old journey.

Any details or tips would be appreciated so much.

Cheers me ol' buddies.;)

Joe.

Hey Joe!

I´m having the same problem as you are! I´m going to India in February and I´m not sure about how to get to Katmandu. Anyway, I checked in the internet and I found a airticket Delhi - Ktm US$150,00 (minus 25% if you´re under 30 yrs old).
I heard about buses leaving from Varanasi as well, but I think I´ll decide when I get there ;)

Cheers!

Hello & Greeting from Bijaya
There are quit good air and road connection from the both places to Nepal, There is
also direct bus connection between Delhi & Kathmandu, the direct bus (A/C bus) to
Kathmandu Cost US & 30 and takes about 36 hours. This is just an option otherwise
there are plenty of air services daily from Delhi to Kathmandu.
Looking forward to seeing you in Kathmandu

Hello, Himalaya!

Do you know how much is the air ticket Dlh - Ktm? Is it really US$150,00 minus 25% for people under 30yrs old?

Another question, do you know if I can fly from Ktm to Leh, or Ladak, or somwhere near there? Because I wanted to save time and fly directly to the very north of India, instead of flying to Delhi and afterwards flying to Ladak.

Thanks!

Michelle

Hi Michelle (and anyone else who needs to know;))

I've done a bit of scouting on this subject and found out the following from other forums and sites.

Apparently you can get an overnight train from Delhi to Gorakhpur (12 hrs) and then a bus to the border town of Sonnauli (3hrs). In Sonnauli you can obtain your 60-day visitors visa at a cost of $30 and 2 passport photos(bring dollars with you or you could be many different types of stuck and lost), from there you can get a bus to either Pokhara or Kathmandu (about 9hrs through amazing scenery).

This seems to be a very happy medium between Expensive Flights and Cheap Bus Torture. I think my friends and I will do it this way as it will only cost around $60 (including visa).

If anyone has travelled this route or has any knowledge of it, PLEASE leave Michelle and I some words of confirmation that this is still an available option...it would mean a lot.

Go rabh maith agat.

Joe.

Thanks Joe! Yeah, that option seems to be a good one as well, but I´m concerned about the time....how many days do you think it could take?

I found out about another otpion, an a/c bus that goes Delhi - Varansi - Katmandu, directly....have you heard about this way?

I reaffirm what Joe said. if anyone knows anything about it, please let us know...

p.s.: I have another question, and what about going from Ktm to Lhasa. Are you going by plane or overland? Will you make a trekking there?

Hello everyone who needs to know.

I have not personally undertaken this journey, but a friend just recently came from Kathmandu to Varanasi via Sanauli by bus. So yes, it is a viable option. I also believe that the bus proceeds from Varanasi all the way to Delhi.

He even made a detour to the Chitwan National Park on his way down to India and had a wonderful time. So if you have the time you might want to include a stop there.

Additionally you can either fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa or journey overland (about 5 days at a leisurely pace). The journey from the Tibetan border to Lhasa is supposedly magical. Unfortunately with the trouble brewing in Nepal you might have to check to make sure if the overland journey from Kathmandu to the Nepal border is advisable. If you decide to go overland you can stop at the Everest base camp.

Finally I am an Indian citizen and am Bangalore(South India)-Kathmandu-Delhi for abour Rs 11,000 (US $ 250). The rates might be different for Non-Indians.

Hi WeeJoe,

Welcome to India.......I am copying here my earlier message for the same trype of query.

"Regarding your inquiry, In Delhi most
budget hotels are in Mainbazar, Paharganj. There is
direct bus from Delhi to Kathmandu, but it is long and
maybe exhausting. Better option is to take flight or
train first to Varanasi or Gorakhpur and then continue
by buses. I don't have experience on landroutes to
Nepal, but flying is safe, convenient and fast. On the
way there is not that much to see maybe. If you haven't
been in India yet, you could visit Haridwar / Rishikesh
and Varanasi before Nepal. The political situation in
Nepal should be followed also before travel.
November/October is the best season to go to Nepal,
but hotels are very expensive that time 15-20$ per
day. One of my friend was in Nepal in off-season(few days ago), and he paid for same
hotels about 2 $. You can even stay with me if you wish in delhi before moving to nepal . You can find all the
important information from Lonely Planet guides and
internet forums like www.indiamike.com Good Luck for your travel plan.
Have a Nice Journey to the Magnificient India & Himalayan Kingdom...... "

I hope you got your doubt cleared. You can go to Varanasi by train and then from there go to Nepal or you can go to Nepal from delhi direct by air. But try to visit Haridwar/ Rishikesh/ Varanasi for your lifetime experience of these spiritual places.

Thanks............Aman

Hello again,

I've checked on the Indian Airlines website and the return price for a flight from Varanasi to Kathmandu is R4590 (£55).

This may help somebody.

Slan abhaile.
