Would it be an idea to create your own map of any kind. Not only the travelmap with your travel routes, dates etc.

But worldmaps (or continent or country maps) where you can just click and view countries, cities or specific sites you have visited. Something like the old worldmap on your wall at home, but digital

So you have a blank map and for your own fun you can add al countries for example. There must be a lot of options on how to do that?

Ooh--I like the idea of push-pins for all the cities you've visited. They have something similar for a Trip Advisor application on Facebook (not that it does any good--the new Facebook buries all your interesting information so no one can see anything without spending an hour hunting. New Facebook just makes it easier to advertise! ).

I'm with Michael--I've always wanted to get a big, cork-backed map of the world to stick pins in it. I think a TP equivalent would be great! (And WAY better than any Facebook second-rate stuff).

I think that would be a great idea! I've also always wanted a map on my wall with pins in (once I buy my own place I'm going to do it!) so it would be cool to have an online version.

Another one of the posts I've been meaning to answer for a few days!

So, just to be clear Michael, you're thinking of starting with something like a blank canvas and then choosing (tickbox or something) which countries/continents to add to that blank canvas? Or more the kind of thing where you have a map and then tick off what sites you've seen and it creates little pins on the map? The latter is actually kind of already possible if you don't map a trip it will create dots (like this one). Not ideal and probably not what you meant, but just in case :)

I know there's a few tools out there where you can tick countries off of a world map and originally that's kind of what I had in mind for our mapping feature too, but it got a bit more expanded than that when we started working on it Is that what you had in mind?

Apologies for the questions, but trying to get a clearer picture of what you had in mind!

Cheers,

Sam

Yep Sam, that is exactly what I mean.
Basically, it comes down to the digital push-pin variety.
But with unlimited possibilities, because you can create new maps over and over again. Maps with UNESCO sites, maps with cities, maps with countries (no dots but colours) and maybe maps with countries/cities/sites that are really high on your list.
That would be great, but not sure this would be an idea or possibility here on TP.
Cheers!

I thought that's what you meant, ie. the possibility to create multiple maps with different types of objects on them. That's quite difficult, at least if it's anything like what I am imagining. You'd tick some boxes and it would then outline/colour those countries on a white canvas. And then not just for countries, but also for cities, sites etc. Which means you'd need outlines of all those objects. I can vaguely picture it in my head, but have a hard time getting my mind around how much work it would be to actually put together. A good 4-6 months at the minimum I'd think :(

There are alternatives now already where you can tick boxes to outline countries. I don't think this is what you mean as I have something way cooler than this in my mind based on your description, but have a look at world66 for example. That map could actually be embedded on your Travellerspoint blog too if you wanted (it just ends up creating an image). Something like that is what I originally had in mind for TP about 5 years ago, but like I mentioned in the last post, it kind of got a little more detailed than that :)

It would be quite cool if you could generate a personalized map like this and then download it in posterformat to print for your room/office though

Cheers Sam!
That world66 map looks pretty cool indeed.
I can now see clearly by blank areas...although I knew that of course, now it justs painfully shows
Enjoy your next 4-5 months;)
