I just joined the winter competition with some photos of Iceland.
When editing the photos and tagging them as 'winter' and 'competition' and afterwards saving them, it fails and asks for more information. The location is required but as the photo is not taken in or near a specific city, village or town I put Iceland as a location. It works fine, but why is this necessary? On my world map the photo is still placed right at the spot where I locationed it manually....

Country has always been a required field for "photos" (as opposed to "images"; if you untick "Show in Gallery", the location field won't be required anymore - 'course, then they wouldn't show for the photo competition either). The reason for this is that all the main navigation to photos goes via country, so a photo without country would be effectively unfindable on the site. Occasionally this is annoying to the people uploading the photos, but it's basically the only bit of meta-data the site asks in return for the unlimited free hosting, and the reason we can have these awesome country photo galleries.

Thanks Sander. But this was different.
I already had these photos uploaded a year ago. I only wanted to add the tags of winter competition. After saving only these two words, it asked me to complete the location field. Which I already did last year.
The location I had was Jokulsarlon, Iceland. But he didn't recognize it, and when saving changes I can not manually adjust it either like when uploading the original photo.
I hope this makes sense, otherwise you might try it with your photos

Hmm, this would seem to be a bug. I could have sworn this one was squashed a while ago though, so will have to double check. Peter and Dmitry's domain :)

Hiya, I sorta had a similar problem, see thread Photo Location - I ended up being able to add the location...

Any news on this one?
I just tried to edit one of my photos because there was 'Sony DSC' in the description field. I removed it, didn't work. It said: please provide more information. Then I saved it again while keeping Sony DSC in the field and it was saved. Is a description required? Don't think so.
Cheers guys!
Michael

Hmm, I can save photos just fine without a description. Can you try saving it with some different text? Wondering if the exif data is (incorrectly) making that a required field...

This error (at least what Utrecht originally reported) seems to happen with _any_ photo which was saved at a custom location. Tracking down the specifics at the moment.

Digging deeper, it wasn't "any" custom location that was the problem, it was when a single custom location had been created multiple times. (Which should never happen, but somehow slips through disconcertingly often anyway.)

Anyway, I just committed a quick fix that should always allow photos to be edited when they have a custom location created previously, regardless of that multiple locations problem. Photos still can't be assigned a new (existing) custom location when it exists multiple times, but that's step 2, and a bit more involved.

(Utrecht: Note that this isn't live yet, but should hopefully be so soon.)

I thought it must be something semi-obscure, because I was updating some photos yesterday with a custom location with no problems at all (and even editing them). Michael, note I'm not uploading this either just yet as I want Peter/Dmitry to have a look over it first.
