I've stayed at 2 places in Rome that were very affordable. The one with the best location is Hostel des Artistes (http://www.hostelrome.com). It's just a few blocks from the main train station (Termini) and very easy to find. Super easy access to buses and the metro. The other place, Family House (http://familyhouse.hotelinroma.com), is a bit trickier to find and further from Termini, but again has great access to public transportation. Both places have fabulous staff - very friendly and helpful.

We stayed in this B&B, it's nearby the Termini station. About 8 a 10 min walk.
The owner is Greek and speaks English very well. Of course he and his wife
will help you with your questions.
At the opposite of the street is Palazzo del Freddo, for a very good icecream
At the map in the site

you'll find your adress too.

I hope that this will help you out.

Gurt.

PS: don't buy a bus ticket in the plane, before arriving at Roma airport. You'll be waiting with hundreds
of other travellers of your plane! Just buy a ticket of one of the general busses in front of the arrival hall.
