Who can recommend a good hostel in Vancouver? I'll be spending a couple of days there seeing the sites, looking for somewhere with a reasonable location, and fun, although not a crazy party hostel. I'll be there in June

Best is Jericho Hostel-a bit of a bus ride but fabulous location.

It has been several years since we visited Vancouver, but we were able to persuade on of the hostels to remain open beyond normal business hours because of the late arrival of our plane. The taxi driver "flew" through town for us. The personnel of the hostel showed themselves non-plussed and courteous upon our arrival. Prices were very acceptable.

If you were to do a Google Search under Skytrain + Hostel + CN Train/Bus Terminal, I think you would find it. The nearness of the skytrain means you can get almost anywhere with the minimum of difficulty.

I know the place you mean-terrible part of town crawling with drug addicts I wouldn't put a dog up there not even a vicious dog.

A number of sleazy older hotels have been converted to so-called hostels so be careful choosing-the ones on Granville St are said to be OK but would be noisy until late @ night.

Listen...a great rule of thumb when travelling the world is NEVER stay near the bus station or train station unless you have to. That´s where the seeds hang out. Now I LIVED overlooking the train station as it is being regentrified, but it still ain´t a place I would hang out.

A very popular and hip hostel is the Cambie Hostel on Cambie and Cordova. I´ve never stayed there as I lived in Vancouver, but I´ve been into their pub loads of time and it´s cool.

If you head to this area, there are several other hostels in the blocks around it.

The SameSun hostel on Granville street is another favourite. About Granvill and Smithe, I think. Sam is right. It ´ll be loud at night. The whole of Granville in that area is filled with pubs and nightclubs.

Good luck out there. Don´t stay near the train station/bus station., I beg you

i stayed in vancouver last month, i stayed in the st clair hotel on richards st, it was really clean, quiet (a lot of older people seemed to stay there) and right in downtown vancouver and cheap if you are looking for a private room!

my friend stayed in the HI-Vanouver Central, this was also nice and had more of a "hostel" atmosphere, it was quite noisy at night though as there is a lot of night life on this street!

basically just stay away from the hostels in east hastings area and you'll be fine!

A few of my friends stayed there last March during an archaeology convention, and it was pretty decent. They had no problems, and everything was within really easy walking distance -- Granville Island in one direction, Stanley Park in the other.

Have fun! I love Vancouver! Take completely waterproof shoes/boots, though. That weather changes from 70 degrees to slush in a matter of minutes. Totally freaky.

Samesun. Its probably not the nicest hostel ever, but if your looking to make friends I can imagine a better place to do that, and its right in the middle of the city everything is within walking distance. Also there is a HI across the Road which was recently refurbished so if the Samesun just doesn't work for you the HI can bail you out.
