Changes to Schengen - Switzerland joined

Travel Forums Europe Changes to Schengen - Switzerland joined

It's now been confirmed that Switzerland has joined the Schengen area, which means it can no longer be used for "visa runs" for people only allowed 90days in the Schengen area. This affects a number of non EU passport holders.

Oddly enough, for slightly obscure reasons Liechtenstein did NOT also join, meaning that for the first time in 122years, there now have to be border controls between Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

However unless you happen to know somebody with a helicopter, you can't hide out in Liechtenstein between Schengen visa's, as there is no way in or out without travelling through Austria or Switzerland, which are both Schengen, and you aren't allowed to stay in Liechtenstein that long

... you could take a little rubber boat and cross the Rhine in the middle of the night

Very strange that Liechtenstein didn't join. I thought that one of the reasons that Switzerland and Liechtenstein joining hadn't happened earlier was to ensure that both could join at the same time.

Oh well, I guess I will just have to retreat to the UK whenever I get close to my 90 days...
