Visa Debit, or Mastercard Debit Card for Europe?

Travel Forums Europe Visa Debit, or Mastercard Debit Card for Europe?

Hi all.

I'm heading to Europe in March of next year. I'm going to be travelling all throughout and may spend some time working in Ireland (I've just sent off an application for Irish whm visa). I've been reading up a bit on ways of accessing money and it seems that a debit card plus a travellers cash card (Commonwealth bank, whom I'm currently with offers this "pre loaded" option) would be a good idea. Basically I want to know

1: Have I made a good decision choosing these two cards?

2: Should I get a Visa Debit, or a Mastercard Debit card? (or both?)

Commonwealth offers the Mastercard Debit (since only recently) and if I wanted a Visa Debit I'd have to start an account with another bank (prob ANZ).

Is there another option, like opening an Irish bank account for example?

Opinions?

Thanks.
Ollie.

If you're going to be working, you'll most likely need a local bank account to be paid.

As mojorob says, if you are going to work you'll need a bank account (and probably want one).

As for Master vs Visa, I wouldn't really worry which one you have. They are much of a muchness. Just read the fine print regarding fees, etc.
