travelmaps: Swansea missing?

Travel Forums System Talk travelmaps: Swansea missing?

Maybe it's me, but I couldn't get the city of Swansea, Wales to appear on my travel map. Could it be that it's not in the database?

Well, what do you know, it was missing. There were about 10 other Swansea's, but not the one that matters. Also another dozen or so people who added it in manualy.

I've added it in under United Kingdom, as that's consistent with the rest of the database. It may not show up easily right away, due to caching, but it should eventually.

Actually, this gets stranger.. Cardiff isn't in there either . I now wonder if any welsh cities are

Ok fixed Cardiff also. Other towns appear to be there.. just checked some random ones like Aberdare, Mountain Ash and Pontypridd and they're all in place.. weird!

Actually wait.. I see. Cardiff is listed as Caerdydd. And Swansea was listed as Abertawe. Yeah, that's useful!

That'd be my fault. I pruned away all alternate names from the database for displaying on the map (of course, that was before we primarily used the autocomplete mechanism for finding location names, for which those alternate names are actually useful).
I don't know how it's possible that the Welsh name got preference over the international name, as I'm pretty certain I had the query run in such a way that the international names were the ones retained - but then again, there was a lot of weirdness in the original data set, so maybe these particular names weren't correctly marked as the international names.

I'm guessing they were indeed marked as the international name. Peculiar for sure.

Damned you all.

My cunning plan to only have real names in the homeland has been foiled by the Dutch!

Btw

wouldn't make much difference as they are the generally used Welsh versions anyway (the Welsh for Mountain Ash is almost never used). You want to check if places like Casnewydd, Wrecsam, Caergybi, Yr Waddfa, Abermaw, Pen-y-Bont etc are listed. If they are, you are missing the more frequently used "english"/international names

As someone who just travelled to Swansea, Arizona, I resent the concept that only Welsh Swansea's count... ;)
