There's nothing wrong with camping.. and if you're not planning on taking a vehicle then it might not be the right idea.
I dont know very much about the quality of tents, but im sure you will find a camping shop when you arrive, if you dont have that much money to spend, I just go to BIG W to buy a tent, they seem to have some pretty decent tents, I bough my last from there, just for camping on weekends.
May i suggest keeping a real good eye on the weather patterns.

I agree, I think it's cyclone season around Feb in NW Australia so it'd be worth watching the weather. But there isn't anything wrong with camping in a tent while you tour around Australia, I suggest getting something fairly compact that's easy to set up and make sure you decide what's easy and not the salesman in the shop! I camped for a month in a touring tent and that was enough for me, packing it and my bedding up everytime we wanted to move drove me crazy!
