Hello Travellerspoint! First post here.

I'm taking a semester off school to travel Australia. I've got 5 months (January to May) with no responsibilities, no plans, no restrictions, just the opportunity to live in the moment and explore myself, the country, the people, and live life on the edge.

My main priority is partying. I want to go where the nightlife is. Nightclubs galore. But I also plan on learning how to surf and exploring the more mellow aspects of traveling as well.

I'm going alone, and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

I've got a couple questions for you guys.

-What cities have the best nightlife other than Melbourne and Sydney?

-Is train the best way to travel between cities as a solo traveler? If not, then what?
(I've heard of a one time fee train pass that covers multiple runs. Anyone know anything about that?)

-Whats the best way to transfer money from US to AUS and set it up so I can pull out cash when I need it, through bank accounts?

-Wheres the best place to learn how to surf / best beach life?

-I plan on staying for extended periods of time in Melbourne and Sydney, do you recommend Hostels as a place to stay? If so, can anyone recommend specific ones in those cities?

Thanks in advanced, peace and love, and see ya in Oz.

Hey Razzah,

looks like you have a great trip ahead.
Some really cool places to go to for nightlife other than melbourne and sydney would be Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, it is not a nighclub, but a really cool bar clled cheeky monkey which is always full of backpackers and travellers.
Melbourne has the best nightclub, way better than sydney. The best way to get around australia is to fly, but that can be very expensive, so buses and trains are the best. greyhound have a pretty good service and are also pretty cheap.
Also is you are going around for 6 months, might be worth having at look at getting and aussie travel saver, i got one and have saved heaps of money on my trip so far. Try doing a tour if you want to learn how to surf, you would then be able to get from A to B as well, so could kill two bird with one stone. They are pretty cheap and also cover your transport and accommodation as well.
The best way to get money out of the US is to use your US bank account, and just take money out of the ATm, the you dont have to worry about transferring it all the time. Just try to get a bank account in the US that doesnt charge heaps in transaction fees. or even have a look the travelex cash passport they are also good. The best place to learn how to surf would be byron bay, because it is.

Some really good hostels in Melbourne are Base, they are in st kilda and pretty close to everything. but there are heaps of them around. Have a look at home backpackers in sydney, i have heard that they are pretty good.

Have a good trip

In all seriousness, you are much more likely to encounter bogan-style pubs than real nightclubs outside of Sydney, Melbourne and a couple of other places.
