My boyfriend and I would love to spend the 24th - 26th staying at an orphanage or another kind of volunteer project in Buenos Aires or Montevideo to help for Christmas. Does anyone know of anywhere we can contact?

Thank you!

While I doubt that your 'help' will be needed or appreciated (sorry for the scare quotes, I'm just very skeptical about people's motives to go volunteering), you may want to try simply asking around at a few catholic churches: the bonairese diocese runs a number of projects that may interest you.

That is the rudest, most pessimistic comment I could ever expect to receive - especially when inquiring to do something for others in the true spirit of Christmas. I'm shocked at your assumption that our help would not be needed / appreciated and that we may have wrong motives! I opened an orphanage in Mexico when I was 23 and ran it for 5 years. It was the joy of my life and I received only enough money for food for all that time. My boyfriend is of the same heart and we are traveling to gain a better understanding of the world so we can open a non-profit project somewhere in the world and help children in need to the best of our ability. There are many people in the world that have realized the beauty and joy that service creates for the ones who serve as well as the ones served. Obviously, you have not experienced that kind of joy or you would never question the motives of someone wanting to volunteer for Christmas. I hope one day you do.

i also agree that was a totally rude thing to say. beyond rude, even, and totally off the mark as far as help not being needed. i´m in buenos aires right now, and the homeless population here is totally out of control. entire families, with babies, living on the streets, everywhere. people digging in the trash aaaalllll the time, 5 year olds carrying their toddler siblings around, begging for change. its incredibly sad and i´m quite positive organizations need all the help they can get.

i wish i had an idea of where you could volunteer but i´m not sure... maybe just google it, if all else fails. otherwise maybe check the lonely planet forums??

good luck, i hope you find what you´re looking for.

as for the disgruntled responder, discouraging someone from helping people survive is incredibly f´d up.

I am not denying that BsAs, as all other large cities, is full of people that can use some help. The question is whether a random stranger with nothing more to offer than a few spare days and a wish to do good is the kind of help that is needed. In my opinion (not to mention from my talks to people who work in charity, both in Europe and South America), that is not the case.

If anyone wants to alleviate other people's misery, by all means let them. But think about the best, most effective ways to help, which are money and long-term support, rather than a personal christmas charity project.
