How much will i need for my budget RTW (kind of) trip?

Travel Forums Round the World Travel How much will i need for my budget RTW (kind of) trip?

This is a completely new, rough from scratch RTW trip itinerary, im just after a rough idea of the costings for it, are my rough day budgets about right give or take a few pounds?

When i say '10 days if no work', it doe's what it says on the tin, i will be looking for work in these places, if i can't find any work then i will be spending 10 days there, so just think of it as 10 days there.

Start: London to

1. New York - 10 days 30 GBP per day

2. Honolulu - 10 days 30 GBP per day

2. Auckland - 10 days if no work 30 GBP per day

3. Sydney - 10 days if no work 30 GBP per day

4. Beijing - 10 days 25 GBP per day

5. Tokyo - 10 days 30 GBP per day

TOTAL: 1450

End: London

I shan't be buying a RTW ticket, i will be pre-ordering the first ticket and second ticket, because of working in New Zealand and Australia.

Flight Estimates (inc tax):

[*]London - New York = 650
[*]New York - Honolulu = 500
[*]Honolulu - Auckland = 650
[*]Auckland - Sydney =130
[*]Sydney - Beijing =550
[*]Beijing to Tokyo =410
[*]Tokyo - London =430

TOTAL = 3320

Other Costs

Travel (eg. taxi, shuttle, airtrain etc) 50
Emergancy = 200

GRAND TOTAL Approx 4900 GBP

Im planning on raising just under 4000 GBP and then making the rest up when working in OZ or NZ, is it do'able? Can i do it!

What am i missing? Can i cut down on anything? All help appreciated!

Sorry i have slightly changed the course!

Below is a very rough idea of what i think things may cost, it's actully nearly bang on what i thought it may be, remember, this is extreme budgeting!

Flight Costs

London to New York - 650
New York to Honalulu - 500
Honalulu to Auckland - 650
Auckland to Sydney - 130
Sydney to Tokyo - 500
tokyo to London - 500
TOTAL 2930

So as you can see, already it's costing a bomb, but i know that this is the most expensive part of the journey, all the flights costs have tax and other charges included in them, and i havn't just gone for the cheapest flight that poped up! Because we all know, when i get to the airport its not going to bet he same price, maybe more, mabe less, but it's all got to be sorted!

A good website for checking costs is www.justtheflight.co.uk.

So were carrying the 2930 forward and then working out the costs of food and drink, accomodation and other charges, snags i may come accross, including all the equiptment and clothes i will need!

It looks like im not staying very long doesn't it! But in Sydney and Auckland i will be finding work and staying there for a few months each! But for the fincances sake i have just put 10 days in case i can't find a job

New York - 40 GBP per day X 5 =200
Honalulu - 30 GBP per day X 10 =300
Auckland - 30 GBP per day X 10 =300
Sydney - 30 GBP per day X 10 =300
Tokyo - 30 GBP per day X 10 =300

TOTAL = 1400

So lets bring the flights forward too, its 2930 for flights + 1400 for which = 4330

Now this is were it will differ with different people, all my equiptment - PDA, clothes, bag, toiletries etc, are being bought for me, by family, weras with most other people it wouldn't be! So i don't need to add them to the list.

Im going to add a few hundred in case of an emergency, for example healthcare, taxi, shuttle, airtrain etc - flights etc + 470

GRAND TOTAL: 4800

Fair enough you're going "Around" the world but you're not exactly seeing much of it. You could spend at least 5 months in Europe with the sum you've saved. To me it seems you're just getting screwed on flights.

Just a suggestion but why don't you decide on a place where you really wanna work and then plan a route towards that destination?

Which is why i put 'kind of' in the title.

I have already seen alotof europe, the itinerary is leading me to places i have wanted to visit for some time.

I have scrapped this, see the Asia forum for what im doing now.

Well the only two places I can help you with are Hawaii and New York. If the rates hold your looking at about $45 US a day in these places... NYC will cost you around $30 USD for a hostel alone. You could get several cheap meals (pizza, street vendors ect..) I would plan a bit more especially if you plan on drinking. Transportation is not so bad. Get a 7-day unlimited metro card. You can ride any subway or bus on that.. One free thing to do is take the staten Island Ferry. Its free and and takes you from lower manhattan right past the statue of liberty, good views.. Hawaii just as expensive.. Just a heads up...
