Am travelling to LA in Dec. We are thinking of going to the Getty Centre & museum etc. Has anybody any reviews and suggestions of the centre? We are staying in Venice and will need to get there via public transport. If anybody has suggestions for must-sees in Venice this would be appreciated too.
Getty Center is a must when in LA!
Apart from the many exhibitions (permanant and some only for weeks/months) the building initself is quite spectacular with a nice view over LA. I suggest you go to their site http://www.getty.edu/museum/ and decide on a few things you want to really see when there, because it will be impossible to take in all of it in one day.
Thanks for the suggestions! Will def make this part of our itinerary now. What else have you seen and done in LA?
If someone wants a sneak preview of the Getty Museum before going there, look up the movie entitled "Bean--The ultimate disaster movie", starring Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean.
About half of the movie is shot at or around the Getty Museum and it is a story about Mr. Bean as an art critic from England coming to America to talk about Whistler's Mother (the painting).
It's also quite a funny movie, in addition to showing the outside (and some inside shots) of the museum.
The Getty is really cool at night.
Not only is the Getty Centre a great stop, but West LA has other great museums. The Hammer Museum near UCLA is free, MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and LACMA (Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art) both have great showing. Los Angeles also has decent public transportation to get to each of these. If you're into the art scene you should definately check out Venice Beach which has amazing street performers and artists (as well as having a drum circle at sunset each night).
Keep in mind that the Getty is kind of an island... it's on a hill where you have to take a shuttle and it's not near anything else. But you'll be right by UCLA, so you should check out the Hammer while you're over there.
hope that helps!
