Travel Forums System Talk forum entries marked as spam

This has probably been mentioned before, so sorry if it's a repitition!

I've noticed that when forums entries are marked as spam, if you go to reply to the thread on the reply screen you can read the entry (it doesn't have "UNDER REVIEW! This entry has been reported by one of our Respected Members or Travel Gurus" etc..)

Is there a reason for this, as it seems to be an odd inconsistency.

Originally that was probably just an oversight with implementing the feature; I suspect nowadays it's mostly left as-is because it's a convenient way for regular members who know about it to see what the entry was all about and thus be able to answer when the original poster questions why his or her entry was marked as being under review, and/or see if the link contained in the flagged post is the same as in other entries by the same person (which might thus also need flagging).

The important thing is to hide the original content from search engines and casual visitors who're just browsing.

Heh, you're right. That is inconsistent and to be quite honest, I've never noticed it.

I've just uploaded a fix to this, so you shouldn't see it anymore. I'm not sure about the benefit of keeping it there personally.. if there is in fact some great desire among people to have an option to show flagged entries, let me know and I can consider how that could be done in a decent way.

For real? Wow, I thought this was one of those things that everyone knew about (I *know* I've seen quite a few other people mention the option over the years). Must be because as admin you always see everything...

No great desire, but it's proven useful a couple of times over the years, plus I always look at entries marked as spam to see which URLs were being spammed so I can recognize if they happen again in more subtle ways.

I guess I very rarely would be replying to a thread with a flagged message in it. After all, I would usually have taken care of the flag before replying! And then, if that rare occurrence wasn't enough, I'd also have to scroll down below the fold and actually connect the dots that the entry is still showing. Yep, honestly never noticed

I don't recall others mentioning this "feature" before, but maybe they did and I just didn't pay attention. I do that sometimes

It was a "hot topic" back in the Wocca days. He thought he'd discovered some big secret and spread the word. Most of the regulars already had discovered it on their own. I know I did. Those who know the "secret" tend to look out of basic curiosity and to see what type of content warranted a flag.

I know some of the mods (Kris and I included) have found it useful at times. Once in awhile, in those borderline threads, someone will ask for a "second opinion" about the flagging. Being able to look at the questioned post allows for discussion and easier decision-making. It's not commonly done so if the "option" to view the post is gone - it's gone. Just my 2 cents.

Dang! The secret's out!

That's the only way I could read the top-secret spammed post..;)

As a couple of people with Moderator status has mentioned it can be sometimes useful, perhaps limiting the visibility of the flagged post may be a way to go? For example so Mods & Admins can see it, but others can't.

Well, admins can always see flagged. And mods can see it too if that is a forum they are moderating. These people need to be able to see it in order to be able to decide whether to delete it or not.

Psst! There's another secret. Use the quote function to read it. Don't tell anyone!
