I've got the machine readable passport which you now need for American customs, but when I used it in Singapore last year they couldn't get the machine to read it.
This wasn't a problem in Singapore (other than taking a few more minutes to get through customs) but I know that American customs is a lot stricter so does anyone know if this could cause me problems if it turns out that their machines can't read my passport either?
I suggest that you go to the UK Immigration to verify the condition of your passport. It's better safe than sorry. I'm sure you do not want to be part of the deportation statistics. Ok, maybe it's a bit exaggerating. Even if they do allow you to go through, I believe you would not want to go through the delay and hassle, and possible embarrassment at the US Immigration checkpoint .
I know what you mean. The US is so strict and disorganised right now that flying to and fro is no fun.
They are due to introduce compulsory Iris-scanning machines for us Brits and some others. No kidding!
I agree with evryone, Im currently renewing my passport, due to overwaer, it still looks ok, but Im taking no chances (new zealand passport), hell of alot of painful paper work, but Id rather do it now, rather than at a us passport control office. it seems sad to give up my well travelled passport. but oh well
anyway hope you get it sorted, Im off to tackle this forms.arrr
