Hi, i stayed in the official youth hostel in Zagreb. It was ok. It was very close to the train station, though a bit of a hike to the bus station. It was about a 15-20 minute walk to the old town, but there are plenty of buses and trams about.
If you got to
it wil give u some information about the hostel. prices are reasonable and though the accom isnt the best - it is situated ona a rather noisy street - it is certainly habitable.

Hope this helps

I stayed last time at the Hotel Ilica, which is easy to get to as Ilica is a fairly major street that can take you right into the main square area with little trouble. It's right off a stop on the tram, too. If I remember correctly, it was about 60 euros to stay there a night, or you can pay in kunas or with a credit card. Oftentimes, using a credit card is best, since the cc company can get you the best exchange rate without fees back to your country of origin.

Anyway, Ilica is very nice, the people who worked there were friendly and the rooms were small but comfy. I'd probably stay there again, since it's in my budget.

All best!

Bruno, the website only has places listed in Italy, which is fine to take the ferry across, but am I missing something on there about Croatia?

We stayed at the Hotel Ilica when we were in Zagreb in May 2004. Our room had bugs crawling out of the walls and it gave is the willies. The staff complained that the owner does not take care of the hotel and they always have problems. They couldn't move us to a different room because the hotel was full. Instead they sprayed it down with bug spray. We couldn't keep the window open when we were gone because the window was on the ground level right near a sidewalk.

Needless to say, I would not recommend the Ilica Hotel!

Feel free to ask me other quesitons about Croatia. We spent 2 weeks there in May/June.
