OK, so i've vaguely decided my route... I've saved my money and I know I want to go in May...
Whats the best way to get this ball rolling? Should I just walk into a travel agents and tell them my plans? Are they used to these kind of year long trips? Will they increase the cost massively?
I've used online route planners etc, but thats a long way away from actually talking to people and getting everything sorted...
For a RTW ticket, you'll want to go to a travel agency specializing in such tickets; in my experience, most regular travel agencies (in the Netherlands at least) don't have experience with them and can't even book them other than by sending the information off to their head office.
If you're not physically nearby such a travel agency, you could also work through the website of such an agency (travellerspoint is an affiliate for one such outfit), but I personally have found it helpful to bounce ideas for alternative flights and route variations off a person sitting behind a desk there. The place I went to charged a rather high flat fee on top of the fixed RTW ticket price, but for that they're happy to sit through a booking session of an hour or two (twice even, in my case), which I thought made their fee entirely worth it.

Internet research!! Compare RTW ticket prices from different companies, look at the routes they offer, the prices, their flexibility etc etc. STA (and I'd assume some other companies) have a trip builder function on their site which means you can mark out your own RTW route then send it off to them for a quote. This could be a good place for you to start
I've actually just booked...
I took the advice here and spoke to the people at STA quite a lot... I've got an itinerary i'm happy with at a great price!
I leave on May 4th for my first RTW trip :D
What's your route then?
I'm looking to do my first RTW trip (on my own too) later this year so I'll be hoping to book soon as well
I will be going to...
I leave on May 4th and will be gone for 11 months!
cool route - refreshing to see someone deviate from the usual route to tak ein China and parts of South America
