Before recommending destinations, it would be nice to at least now where you are from, because airplane tickets from let's say North America to Central America are much cheaper from Europe or to South America.

In general though, Bolivia is cheap and the western part is one of my favorite places in South America. You can combine it with the south of Peru and head into northern Chile for a week or so. You can fly into Lima for example, which has much better international connections than La Paz or Santa Cruz in Bolivia.
Chile, Argentina and Brazil are beautiful, but more expensive depending on what you like and where you are going.

hi thanks for the advice!

yes silly me i should have said where i was from! i am from England, so we will be flying from London or Manchester. wherever we get best deal. Our budget is not huge so we wanted to fly to wherever was cheapest from England and go from there. I think we will have only £1000 budget or there-abouts. I have no preference of where to go except would be great to go to the beach for a few days. I think the Inca trail would take too long? I am quite clueless as I have never been so any advice is helpful. thanks x

Summer in Europa means Winter in Southamerica.
So not realy beach time.

Hi Michael, I'm thinking about doing something similar later on this year. I've been looking at a fairly standard route of Rio - down the cost - Iguzu - BA - mendoza - Santiago. Bus seems the cheapest way of doing things but I think that's prob the max amount of travelling to fit in 4 weeks.

International flights (into Rio out of Santiago) seem to be minimum £700

Let me know how you get on with the planning!

Peru Peru Peru! I went to the rainforest on the eastern side of the country, and it was amazing. But that was nothing compared to Machu Picchu. If you go to South America please don't leave without seeing Machu Picchu. Also Buenos Aires is fun, and Chile has great scenery.

I deeply apologize to Marlis....but since many of the countries in South America lie on or near the equator...There are many countries where it is ALWAYS beach time. Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil. The Prison Colonies...You are living the water life.
