I stayed at Base Backpackers in central sydney and thought it was pretty good. There is a girls' only floor which is nice, as well as mixed dorms which are slightly cheaper. There is a bar and social area on site, a decent kitchen, it's clean and is a in a really good, central location.

A friend of mine stayed at the YHA in central Sydney and enjoyed it - I have had a look inside and like most YHAs it's clean and secure with good facilities.

My favorite hostel in Sydney is always the Glebe Point YHA (there's a full review behind that link, but in short: great atmosphere, awesome neighbourhood).

Other popular Sydney hostels frequently recommended by people here on the forum are the two hostels opposite Central Station: Wake Up! and the Sydney Central YHA, but both are way at the expensive edge of already pricey accommodation in Sydney, so although they make a good base for starting out, most people don't stay there for very long.

The Base is a great hostel, Wake Up and there is a HI/YHA all pretty close by as well all pretty central.

Hey

I'm also arriving in Sydney next month (12th) and have initially booked 4 nights at Wake Up - I'll be in Sydney for 12 nights but didn't want to tie myself to one hostel (and one area).

When are you arriving? I've never done anything like this before too! Can't wait!

The whole YHA hostel set up is great, I stayed most of the time at YHA Railway Square, they have a sign on the door telling you, you can only stay up to 4 weeks, i think i spent 3 months there. Also stayed at Glebe for a week, but its a bus ride to the city, but if you want something out of the way its great. Railway Sqaure is a party hostel, the staff are great, i should know, i worked there as well. YHA Central is good, but its the flag ship one, and on the expensive side. Railway Sq and Central do a lot of things togeather, for example, we did a Pizza night at central on a tuesday, and a BBQ at Railway Sq on thursday.

I'm back there in November 09 then off to NZ for 2 years.

Have fun, need anymore info, ill be happy to help :)

meagzy, I won't add more hostels to the already given suggestions as you can see from the reviews Sander links to that I highly recommend two of them, even though they are expensive. Especially good for getting setup in my opinion! Although if you do choose either Wake Up or Sydney Central YHA, you'll be spoilt for the rest of your trip, as they are hard to top If you do choose to book one of the hostels mentioned in this thread, you might consider doing it through Travellerspoint (they're all listed here) and activating the 'Social bookings option' when checking out. As it's your first trip, this can be a great way to connect with other Travellerspoint travellers heading to the same location as you on the same days! No obligation, but thought it might be suitable :) More info on social bookings on the tp blog.

Have a great trip! I miss Sydney
