Here is some info on trains to Chiang Mai: http://www.chiangmai-thai.com/train_schedule.htm http://www.1stopchiangmai.com/getting_here/train/ This link below identifies some of the stops. You could Google up some of the cities and see if they are worth a stop. I skipped any in between stops and just stayed in Chiang Mai. I guess it depends on your available time. I have been to Ayutthaya and Bang Pa-In but they were on a separate tours out of a travel agency in Bangkok. Both places were on the list of tours that the travel agencies have. http://www.railway.co.th/English/Time_HTML.asp I have just plopped down in some small towns and looked around for a day or two. But sometimes these little towns get a little boring and your next train or bus seems to be a long time coming. If you do stop off check to see if there is a hotel. I preferred the overnight sleeper when I used the train to Chiang Mai, once it got dark you didn't see too much out the windows. Bring some handwipes, a good book and a few snacks when you are on the train. On the overnight train ride they did take orders for breakfast. If you get that breakfast the eggs and breakfast meat may not be cooked well done! Good luck.
