Hello MissHi ... I went on an amazing trip to Borneo and saw so many orangutans so close ..it was amazing ... It was with a photographer and loads of the money went to a project that protected the rain forest....I think the website was www.agoodplace.co.uk and the guy who arranges the trips was called Ian Wood.

I went to Borneo in 2007 and saw orang utans in their native habitat in two locations. One was the Danum Valley where they were quite close, but seeing them there is unreliable. Danum is remote, difficult to get to and there are few places to stay. Considerable research would be required to arrange a trip there.

I also saw them on the Kinabatangan River, which was a wonderful experience. There are a number of reasonably priced lodges on the river that include meals and wildlife viewing cruises in small boats. The orang utans were in high trees, farther back from the river, but we saw many other animals and rare birds at close range. I'd stay at least three days. Elephants are sometimes spotted there as well. I want to go back! Send an email if you'd like a recommendation for lodging.

Though others may disagree with me, I do not recommend the Sandakan Orang Uatan Rehabilitation Reserve except as a last resort. It was very disappointing because the animals live in captivity, though they are well-provided for in this research and breeding facility. The entrance fee is hefty though it feels good knowing your money is spent on protection and breeding programs. It is very touristy. One one old female actually walks out among the crowd so the experience is very close up! It is worthwhile if you are unable to see them in the wild.

Many adventurous people enjoy the wildlife experience at Uncle Billy's, but I'm not sure if orang utans are generally seen there.

Borneo is amazing and the locals are delightful. You'll love it!
