Hi,

Firstly sorry if this is the wrong forum, but there didnt seem a suitable one.

I was wondering ways of traveling around Europe, im in Uk, and the rail system or eurail seems to be the most obvious and best suited for my needs. My question is two parted....

1) Does anyone reccomend a place to book the eurail tickets which offers the best deals (mainly in terms of money), whether its online or at travel agents etc.

2) Is it best to book the hotels, hostels, dorms, etc before travelling or is it easier/possible to simply know where they are and turn up. Also which do you reccomend (hotels, etc etc.)?

Thank you

James

(and thank you for the response to my other question on meeting people whilst travelling)

HI, well thought I might help a bit, Good luck
1) Does anyone reccomend a place to book the eurail tickets which offers the best deals (mainly in terms of money), whether its online or at travel agents etc.
---Did the eurail ticket thing last year, its a good deal if you use it as much as you can! Also, note that you have to make reservations and in some places the "seat" is an extra charge. I booked on-line, think it was rail euro, or some site like that, thought it was a good price.

2) Is it best to book the hotels, hostels, dorms, etc before travelling or is it easier/possible to simply know where they are and turn up. Also which do you reccomend (hotels, etc etc.)?
---Depends on what places, if there are local holidays and such that could make it hard to find a room. I once landed on Maui with out any place to stay only to find out that there was some fun run going on and every thing was booked, except for the beach! The best luck i have had is going with reviews that i find on the web about a place, they are mostly true and honest. I like www.tripadvisor.com/ http://www.hostelworld.com/ http://www.booking.com/

Hope I helped a little! Have great trip!

There are two types of rail passes for Europe: Eurail and Interrail. Interrail is for European residents, Eurail for tourists from outside of Europe.

Eurail passes are generally only for sale outside of Europe.

www.eurail.com FAQ Who can buy a Eurail pass?

As a UK resident you are supposed to buy an Interrail pass, not a Eurail pass. (If you got a Working Holiday Visa you are a UK resident.)

As for your questions:

1) www.eurail.com (buy your Eurail pass at the source without a surcharge from a travel agent)
or the websites of the national rail companies where your journey originates (say you are going from Germany to Italy, then you need to buy from www.bahn.de).

2) Whether to reserve in advance or not depends. If you travel in high season in a group that is larger than 3 people reservation is highly recommended. Reservation also makes sense if you want to stay in a certain place, either because it is the cheapest, the best for your money or the only hotel or hostel in town. Whether to use hostel or hotel depends upon your budget and your mindset and wether you are alone or in a group.
