Hi hope this doesn't break any rules, but after spending a great month in Tanzania I am selling my guide books on ebay.
Lonely Planet - Tanzania 2008 edition ebay Item number: 170291854869
Kilimanjaro - Henry Stedman ebay Item number: 170291850184
All great condition as not taken with me.
both end 11-Jan-09.
Aside from that, the details in short for those wanting to know.
Safari - Bobby tours, really enjoyed it 6 days, great people and company (quite cheap).
Tips: Make sure your tent is properly pegged, inner separate from outer as most got wet.
Get a detour to the migrations at the top of the serengeti. A few hours out of the way up north but worth it (we didn't know, but others did this).
Kili - Zara, good price, though guides didn't have the best kit (they are used by lots of international firms like EWP and one of the largest local companies, Tusker (the beer company) have new kit, Easy Trek have no tent for eating, so probably cheaper.
Tips: Lomosho route, nice and long for acclimitising, Mt Meru helped a lot and was really enjoyable.
longer the route, the better. Lomosho and Shira quieter and cleaner. Meru was fun.
Bring extra money for tipping, as you have more porters than advertised. 2 people = 1 guide, 1 assistant guide, 1 chef, 4 porters.
Staying:
Arusha - Ujamaa Guest house, well run, cheap and nice.
Moshi - Kindoroko has a great roof bar in the centre of town, Springlands has a pool
Other tips:
Moshi, eat at the bbq on the pavement next to Kindoroko, excellent food and value
Dala Dala's are worth it, best way to travel.
Souvienier prices, go for a third, i.e. Masai knife, 20,000 shilling, got for 6,000 (moshi tourist market great for this as 40+ stalls all selling the same).
Buy Kili kit from Decathlon or other cheap store, so you can donate to guides/porters.
Buy sunscream before 30+ 40+, as expensive there
Burning CD's and DVD's is harder than I thought, slow USB1, hardly any DVD burning, so taken spare memory.
Kili airport to Moshi. Sign says $50, we paid $30 (still too much, but no buses).
Zanzibar, Nungwi, is nice and quiet, good prices, great beaches.
Take a snorkely trip for 20,000 shillings for the day (off beach), see lots of fish and cheaper than scuba who were below us (we dived to their level)
Small cafe in main square (dusty space) next to supermarkets, off tourist main front. Rice and meat 3,000, cheapest in town.
Can most likely walk from port to hostel in stown town, very small so taxi can be easily bartered. Don't let anyone walk with you, some others were taken down an alley way and held up with a syringe.
Apart from that, very safe country and good fun.
