In Laos its not really a matter of distance but time... an innocent sounding 100km trip (which wont even take an hour in Malaysia, the way we drive... ) might soon develop into a half day voyage - breakdowns, flat tyres are a fact of travel in Laos...

To sum it up, from Vientiane all the way north to Boten in humane, bite size pieces is Vientiane-Vang Vieng 4 hours plus, Vang Vieng-Luang Prabang 10 hours plus plus, Luang Prabang-Luang Nam Tha 12 hours, and from Nam Tha to the China border at Muang Sing is probably 2 hours. For the crossing at Boten it is about 3 hours from Nam Tha.

You can also get off the bus at Oudomxai (about halfway to Nam Tha) and take another long bus ride to Boten. This might be the more convenient option if you're pressed for time since Oudomxai is the transport hub of the north.

All the above done by bus - seemingly the only form of transport in Laos, other than flying...
