New Bulk Photo Uploader

Travel Forums System Talk New Bulk Photo Uploader

Just a quick note to let everyone know we've switched bulk photo uploader. There were just too many issues with the Flash one to warrant keeping it, not in the least the fact that it had broken for newer versions of Flash!

So we've switched to something quite different, yet probably recognizable for anyone who has uploaded photos to other sites. Aside from wider compatibility, the biggest benefit of this uploader is speed. The Flash solution actually uploaded every single photo to our site, always in full original size, and then resized it on our server and depending on whether you chose to keep the original or not, would delete or save the original.

The new system first checks if you have chosen to upload the originals (that's still possible of course!), then resizes one version of the photo and then uploads the image(s). So if you choose not to upload the originals because you want to preserve space or because you just want to save time, the uploads are much much faster, since now we're only uploading one resized-for-web photo, rather than the massive original size photo. If you choose to upload the originals, speeds will be pretty similar in my experience.

Another benefit is that you can see thumbnails in the folders which can be very useful.

So the biggest benefits of the new system are wider compatibility, speed and ease of use.

Once uploaded, the system is more or less the same.

Of course, if you run into any problems, please let us know by posting here or contacting us! It's hard to test for every single configuration out there...

Congrats on the new Uploader! Just sent stuff up. Took the Java Applet a little while to load, and the dialog box hung around for a while at the end. I only sent up 33x40kb photos totaling 1.86MB. But otherwise ran perfectly.

Just something maybe to consider. I've been using Java based uploaders on other online storage sites a while now. One thing that used to bug me was the inability to select all. As in select all the tick boxes for uploading lots of files rather than having to manually click them.

I can't remember the site, but one of them allows that. It's a nice touch.

Oh, one last thing. Once uploaded, is it possible to batch group photos? I seem to remember TP photo uploading defaulting to having to manually do that ages ago. I'm not missing it. But it would be nice to select a group of photo's and then click the country they are in, rather than do it manually one my one.

Again, it's great to be able to batch upload again on FF!

Yes, it'll always take a little while to load the first time. It does much more on the computer you are working on, so needs to get that set up. But that's typically a once a session kind of thing.

I also noticed the hang at the end. I think this is because of the multiple copies we're saving across different servers. It's safer obviously, but we need to wait for a response from the other server to make sure they've saved properly. Might see if that can be improved.

Actually you can batch select. It works just like files; hold down shift or command key and select multiple pics. Keeping shift or command held down, now tick the little tick box et voila :) Not sure about which command it is on Windows exactly, but the CMD one on my mac is the one I prefer for more granular control.

Batch edit you mean? Yes, that hasn't changed. On your edit page just click on the links behind the fields you want to copy 'downward'. Works for tags, locations and dates.

In fairness, that's always been possible if you didn't have the most updated version of Flash. But yes, good to have something more compatible with the different flavours out there!!

This is actually already possible. Just right click on the photo when you're looking at them in the folder - there is a "Select All" option, as well as "Deselect All" and "Invert Selection" and options to show the photos in list, icon, details or thumbnails forms.

Not entirely sure I get you here.. but are you essentially saying you'd like to add details about the photo at the upload stage rather than the following edit stage? This can actually be achieved with this uploader, so it may become a possibility. There's a lot of powerful things possible with this uploading software actually - it's a big step up.
