I've got a short trip at the end of the month to KL and Vientiane. Flying into Malaysia first then on to Vientiane. I've not been to Laos before and want to know the best way to get money. Obviously kip is the currency, but how can I get it? I always tend to use ATM's (Cambodia/Thailand etc) but apparently there are no ATMs in Laos?
Also if there is a way of me getting the money when I'm already there that's not necessarily going to help me wth paying for a visa in the airport??
Please fill in all the blanks you can to fill me with Laos currency knowledge!!
There are ATMs in Laos. The belief that there are none seems to stem largely from the LP edition that was still in use when I was there in summer 2007, which stated that there was only one ATM in Laos (in Vientiene). I specifically remember there being ATMs in Vientiene, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng (which is tiny), so I wouldn't worry.
I would be shocked if they dont accept USD or credit card at the airport for your visa - both of those are pretty easy to get hold of outside of Laos
There's a good bit of info on thorntree - here's one of the threads to get you started:
For your visa you should have USD in cash. Depending on your nationality the price varies from USD20 to USD42. In terms of everyday use, both USD and Thai Baht are commonly excepted in hotels, restaurants shops etc. There are many ATMs in Vientiane, and a few in all other major destinations. ATMs dispense Lao Kip and a maximum of 700,000 kip at one time (about USD80).
Travellers cheques can be cashed in major destinations.
Have a great trip,
