Hi

We are coming over in Apirl and I'm looking for the best way to get from KL to Koh Samui by air. We had thought of heading north by train but now with the new visa situation we will probably fly into either Bangkok or Phuket depending on which is the easiest option.

After doing a little more searching I have noticed that Berjaya Air fly from KL to Koh Samui, does anyone have any comments on this airline? Which would be more reputable Berjaya Air or Bangkok airlines?

Thanks

Hi,

I have not flown with Berjaya Air before, but they use smaller planes than Bangkok Airways I believe. Have flown with Bangkok Airways before and never had any issues.

Mugsy,
No problem taking the train to Singapore. Malaysia & Singapore will give most westerners a free visa on arrival.

I'm not 100% on the visa situation but apparently if you cross the boarder by land ie Train/bus etc Thailand will only grant a 15 day visa whereas if you fly into Thailand you will be given a 30 day visaI am still looking into this and hopefully can get some clarification soon enough.

Check out Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines. They have recently replaced their entire fleet of Fokker F50 with 5 new ATR72-500. You can fly to Koh Samui (USM) from either Subang (SZB) (the old KL Airport, located just 20-30 mins south of KL city centre) or Penang (PEN).

Hi Hazy,

That is correct - if you arrive in Thailand by land from a neighbouring country you will only 15 days in the country. If you arrive by air you wil get 30 days.

Thank you both for your assistance! I will check out Firefly too, that sounds like a good option

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with their system or I have just missed all the flights for around 6th of May but the earliest I could find a seat on that plane was for 29th of April. We are heading to the full moon party on the 9th of may and if we had planned to stay in Koh Phangan from the 5th of May for 7 nights.

It is almost worth flying up earlier than expect due to the cheap flights but rather than hang around Koh Samui until we go to koh phangan on the 5th is there anywhere else in the area people recommend visiting for a few days?

It seems like they have not opened up the seats in the system for sale. Their official published schedule is only up to 28 March 2009.

Unlike Australia, the advertised fares usually do not include taxes and other applicable fees as there's still no regulations/law on this yet. But Malaysia Airlines, the parent company of Firefly, have recently started publishing and advertising all-inclusive fares. So hopefully Firefly (and AirAsia, in particular!) will follow suit. For some reason, for Koh Samui only, there's an extra special MYR100/THB1000 "Passenger Arrival Processing fee" on top of the usual airport tax and charges. Not so cheap after that fee! Remember to continue to the next step of booking when you found a flight to see the final charge.
