Has anyone been to Pompeii from Rome?
I'm staying in Rome for just a few days in late December and want to take a one-day trip to Pompeii from Rome with a group and a guide, or find a guide there. I'm after someone really cluey, but can do without the shopping stops, lunches and cups of tea on the way! Do you know of any good guides or tours?
Many, many thanks
Not sure if this is helpful but I did Pompeii from Rome in a day in October last year using public transport (trains) - took the express intercity train from Rome (stazione termini) to Napoli (stazione centrale) and then the Circumvesuviano train from Napoli to Pompeii. After that, we bought a guide book in the shop and vaguely followed the suggested route - I didn't fancy an 'official' tour.
This was a pretty inexpensive way of doing it, the tickets cost us about 40 euro each in total. It takes about an hour and three quarters to get from Rome to Napoli, then about another half hour to Pompeii.
Pompeii is fascinating, well worth a day.
A couple of pointers for anybody who fancies doing this:
- Make sure the train is for 'Napoli Centrale', there are trains to at least one other Napoli station, and it isn't close by.
- Make sure you get an Intercity or (preferably) Eurostar train or you could be in for a long day.
- Never forget to validate your ticket before getting on the train!! (I did but the nice guard let me off the big fine)
As the guy said took the express intercity train from Rome (stazione termini) to Napoli (stazione centrale) and then the Circumvesuviano train from Napoli to Pompeii.
There you can find for sure some guide.
