Travel Forums Round the World Travel RTW trip advice - Fiji, NZ, OZ, Indo, Se Asia

After 10 years working and living in and around London I have decided I would like to go travelling mainly because I want to experience Australia (see whether I would like to live and work there in the future) and also to see some of the other places on my travel list. Anyways I would appreciate any advice or commentson my rough trip outline...

I would like to factor the following places into my plans leaving around October 2009:

London(UK) - HOME

SF - 5-7 days
TBH I am not really interested in USA really, but I would need to stopover somewhere to hit Fiji I think at least if I want to arrive fresher! haha

Fiji - 2 weeks
I have wanted to see fiji for a long time and being a keen diver I so want to see what the sea has to offer.
Is 2 weeks too long? I know there's a few islands to visit and I thought if I dived a few days, 2 weeks would be a good amount of time?

NZ - 1 month
North to south or vice versa

Australia - 4-6months
I am hoping to see Melbourne and sydney and maybe do the usual east coast trips. I also want to see if I can find work in Sydney as a web developer. I would also like to dive here too.

Indonesia (Bali/Jakarta) - 4 weeks
Maybe 4 weeks is too long? Still need to work out what I want to do here but again it is somewhere I have always wanted to go.

SE Asia/Thailand - 2 months
Thailands south islands exc. phuket, maybe cambodia or vietnam too. not sure yet

Singapore - 5 days
Quick stopover to see some friends before flying home

I hope to save about £10K to take with me(saved 8K already), with my RTW ticket already paid for.
Does this sound enough?

Thank in advance
Simon :)

Does sound that bad.. A quick trip in the US is ok. Fly into LA and you can go to San Diego, down to mexico, or out to vegas.. All very close and you can do alot in a few days... 2 weeks would be great in Fiji. You can island hop and hit different dives sites on the islands.. Thailand there is a ton of good diving there so check it ok. Kho Tao is a great place.. Otherwise OZ sounds good, maybe a bit more in NZ if you have the time. 5 months OZ and 2 months NZ, unless work is necessary in OZ...

try and spend 6 weeks in NZ if you have the time - then you could do 1-2 weeks on the north island and the rest on the south island. I spent 4 weeks travelling just the South Island and there is still loads I haven't seen.

Hi Simon

This sounds similar to the trip I want to do, so I have been asking around for what length of time to spend in each place. Seems like NZ is best to spend 4-6 weeks there to see most things although like anywhere, you could spend a year doing every place properly! Oz depends on what split you do work/travel I suppose, you could even find a company that will let you move offices as you travel or something.

I do know someone who has given me advice after their travels to SE Asia that it's possible to spend a lifetime there and still have more to do and see. They said they spent a month each in Cambodia and Vietnam, so again, suppose it's how much you want to see and how relaxed/hurried you are.

The money issue, I have read in various places that about £1000 a month average is good to budget for but obviously you'll spend more in Oz than Asia per day but sounds like you have a decent bit of money to get you started and any work you do along the way will contribute.

I've been diving once and loved it, although it was only in Ibiza but if I go on my trip I'm making sure I get qualified first so I can do some proper diving.

Good luck!

Nick
