Hi,

I am looking for advice from those already travelling round Oz. My friend wants to come with me but has a lack of funds, what would you all suggest is the bear minimum you need? Are jobs freely available?

She really wants to come but at present has no money whatsoever but thinks she can get £1k together.....is this realistic!!!??

All help greatly appreciated

Thanks
Emma

How long are you going for?

You can try fruit picking, it can be quite well paid...

Obviously you would need to have a return ticket not including the £1k

Hi,

No, not realistic. The plane ticket itself is gonna cost you at least 611£ (right now at Qantas) - you would want to have at least 6000£ - you can't unfortunately count on living for free and getting a job whenever you need one. My advice is always 'better to stay safe' than to really live on the limit.
You need to take into account the fee for the WHV, the plane ticket, and it is also advised right now that if you are applying for the WHV you need to have at least AUD$5,000 and a ticket home or funds to buy one http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/eligibility-first.htm

I don't know if things have changed dramatically since 2004, but when I was there I had no trouble finding casual resort work. Three times I worked in Aus - in Manly, Airlie Beach, and Port Douglas, and all three times I found hotel or bar jobs and an apartment the day that I arrived, and started working within a couple days. There's jobs out there, you just have to go to the right places at the right time of year.
If 1000 pounds is what your friend has after paying for plane tickets and pre-trip expenses, then I think she'll be ok. You'll have to get jobs as soon as possible and live frugally, but on a budget you can live for more than a month while looking for a job. My only concern is transportation. If you are going to be there for a number of months, than I think buying a car is the way to go. Might not have quiet enough money for that though. So you'll have to plan carefully where you plan to go to work. I don't think you'll have enough money to have the freedom of roaming around the country until you find a place that you like and want to stay.
If this is her budget including plane tickets and what not- forget about it.
