Hello we are flying to Bangkok arround 10th April for 3 weeks and want to travel not flying via the following : Seam Reap , phom Penh , Siagon , then coast to Halong , Hanoi across Laos to Vietiane then back to Bangkok. Has anyone followed this route ? if so have we enough time ? also ideas etc of what to do and how to travel and pitfalls etc dont want to be too touristy but dont want to miss the essentials and are on a budget , Any help /advice appreciated thankyou
I'm thinking about doing that sort of route myself and I might be able to help with with a more detailed plan in a couple of days if no one else has replied by then.
I think you are trying to see too many places in 21 days. You would be on endless buses/trains to attempt this plan. Cut out Laos and you can do most of it.
I suggest the following: 2 days BKK, 1 long day to Siem Reap, 2 days Angkor, bus down to Phnom Penh, 2 days there, bus over to HCMC, 3 days in HCMC for delta, tunnels, city tour, overnight bus to Nha Trang, 2 beach & bay tour days, overnight bus to Hoi An, 3 days for shopping & My Son tour , bus to Hue, 2 days Citadel & tour countryside, overnight bus to HaNoi, 3 days for city, HaLong Bay, fly Air Asia back to BKK. The flight back will be cheaper than buying a visa for Laos land travel back to BKK.
Take a look at my blog, it covers some of this trip. My photos cover almost all of it. Send me a PM if you have questions.
I agree with Mike - too much for 21 days, and especially if you'd travel surface. There are no interstates of any length in SEA. Have you read the horror stories about bus drivers in Vietnam/Laos? I prefer to fly between major destinations!
Thanks for the replies so far have just checked the price on air asia and although we wanted to do laos it might have to wait (i didnt realise the flights were so cheap!) .
