thanks for the tips, leeann. especially about the ATMs. I'm still debating ATMs versus traveller's checks, so the tip about major hotels cashing them is appreciated.

Ah some good suggestions there! April is cherry blossom season, so if you are not able to see any blooms in Tokyo, you might want to move further north - the more north you go, the later the sakura bloom.

You might want to venture into the Tohoku region, which has six prefectures and stretches all the way to the north. Fukushima, the southernmost prefecture, is about a couple of hours from Tokyo on the Shinkansen (bullet train) line. Hanamiyama Park (in Watari) is a privately-owned park that's gorgeous in April, the flowers are in full bloom and I think you should be able to catch some lovely sakura. There's also the Tsuruga Castle (in Aizumakawatsu), previously made headlines during the Boshin War and is now a museum.

Hop over to Yamagata Prefecture and visit the Yamadera - it's a climb of over 1000 steps to the top, but it's worth the workout and the view way up there is fantastic, I can assure you! It'll take about 4 hours and you'll need to change trains to the Senzan Line, but if you like temples and all that, it should be worth it. In Yamagata, you can also head to Yonezawa and visit the Uesugi Shrine - I once saw a Japanese couple go through the wedding rites in traditional garb, it was definitely an unforgettable sight!

Sendai is about two hours from Tokyo on the Shinkansen line and is pretty good for shopping.

Any further north and you might have to consider an overnight stay.
