Curiosity/potential problem with member numbers?

Travel Forums Wiki Travel Guide Curiosity/potential problem with member numbers?

I've just looked at the St. Helena wiki guide to see what is there (and there are several bit wrong with, sorry Utrecht ) before I started updating/filling it out.

My curiosity was aroused by the section at the bottom which automatically (i assume) updates. Specifically, the bit which says...

Saint Helena members (4)

Oooooh, I think. I wonder who the other 3 are. So i click the ink and it tells me, "sorry, no citizens of Saint Helena can be found". So I removed the restrictions to just search for members there, and it still came up with Zero. Now, I know there is at least one member there (me) and guessing that the 4 is pointing to somewhere in the database. Also, if i hit the Travel Helper option below it, for example, it works fine and brings up me.

So any idea why it brings up zero in the search?

Thx

No problem Rich;)
Actually, it was kinda hard to find decent info about sights, getting around etc. I put in some stuff during the projects (getting around was one of them) and otherwise it could take a while for all the countries to be filled in
I guess it would be much better that people who have actually been there or live there add a bunch of stuff.
Cheers

Interesting indeed; I think the reason they show on the Saint Helena travel guide is that that is pulling in information directly from the database. The search function on the other hand uses an index of the database and that index has to be updated every now and then. What it seems like to me is that most likely the wiki is showing all members, regardless of if they have been inactivated or not. So in this case the search is actually more accurate.

The reason you don't show is you have Saint Helena as where you are residing, not your citizenship, which is what that search brings up. You do show up on a search for members & saint helena.

[ Edit: Little change to add in other search term. ]

Does that include members that might have put Saint Helena as citizenship earlier, but changed that later on?

Hmmm. Ok, so if i physically type in "Saint Helena" (but not St. Helena) into the main search box it brings me up, but if i use either the drop down options (citizenship or travel country) I don't.

I am now intrigued as to what this "travel country" option actually is?!

It seems a bit illogical to me that although members show a place next to their name, neither drop down search includes that same place listing. Personally, if i was searching for somebody by a country and they didn't appear in either of those searches, I would probably quit (actually, i'm sure I did do that beforehand many months ago when I was looking for Ascension/Saint members) rather than type in the country name.

regardless of if they have been inactivated or not.

Sorry, my curiosity is now aroused again. I know that people that get banned etc would be inactivated, ditto spammers and spambots. But how/why else might users be inactivated?

The users can inactivate their own account from the My Profile page. Look at the top right hand corner of the page for the link.

Okay, so close inspection actually shows me that the search function isn't working properly in this case. Actually, it's not working properly at all (Australia has about 6000 difference in stats...). Those 4 do exist and aren't inactivated. Naturally, they should show up for the search including citizenship, and also for a general search just on members (like you do). We've known for a while there's a problem with the search based on 'travel country' because basically that got so gigantic that our search engine had a hard time keeping up with it. That search goes through the maps section of the site and figures out who was where when. Definitely on the 'to fix' list! I wasn't aware the citizenship search option wasn't working as that should be much easier for the search algorithm to keep track of...

As Hien pointed out, people can inactivate their own profiles too these days. But yeah, these 4 weren't inactivated :)

FYI, this has now been fixed. Even some weird 'person' called I_am_Clive showing :) Will have to keep an eye on that one
