I've only been to Vietnam, but believe that Cambodia is fairly close in price. In the more popular destinations, you'll pay at least $20. for something nice (cheaper in the rural areas - perhaps $15.) - Hanoi is slightly more expensive, I'd say $25. April will be hot in the region - I go in March. You will probably see ads for much less, but remember that Vietnam has had 25% inflation last year, and many sites display old figures. Your dollars go very far in this country.

Moritz,
April is one of the hottest months in both countries. You will need an a/c room to be comfortable in most cities. Read my blog on VN & Cambodia and you will see I paid under $10 for fan rooms, $10-12 for a/c rooms. The rooms had a/c, cable TV, hot water. Not really a nice room, but OK. You will be in the $20-25 range for another step up in quality. I spend so little time in my room besides sleeping that I don't choose to upgrade to a better room. This leaves more of my budget for tours, souvenirs, restaurants, etc. Your choice.

Send me a PM if you have any questions.

Hi,

It gets warm and foggy in March and April. Hotel rates are still high then, lower from May, real hot. You get only no-window room with 20$ in Ha Noi and Saigon, better room in Hoi An and Cambodia. How do you expect ?

Moritz,
I just did a bit of checking room prices right here on TP. Click on the 'accommodation' option on the left panel. Choose 'VietNam' for the country, then click on a city and see what is offered. In HaNoi, the Sunrise Hotel had double, a/c for $16/nite. HaNoi GH listed a/c rooms for $18/nite, the Bodega Hotel had doubles for $20/nite. In HCMC the Thuan Duc Hotel quoted $18/nite double. The My My Arthouse had $19/doubles.

I stayed in 'mini hotel alley' off De Tham St in HCMC and found many places with a/c in the $10-15/nite range. Most are very similar, tall and narrow, tv, a/c, hot water. I stayed at the Xinh Hotel for $10/nite, but there are dozens like the Xinh in both mini hotel alleys. Good luck with your planning.
