I have read some guidebooks and have lonely planet but was hoping for some advice off people who have been.

I am going with 2 or 3 friends in August. One of my friends is concerned over safetly whilst out drinking in the bars etc. Sow hat places are safe/unsafe to go out at night? S

Also, i will be wanting to do some surfing, obviously CR has great waves but i was wondering about the incidence of shark attacks, whether there is a large shark community in those waters on the pacific and carib side.

Thanks for any help.

Common sense and a wary nature will keep you safe in CR. It´s not overly violent, in my experience. You know what a rough street looks like, don´t go there. It can be disconcerting at first to see a cadre of men walking up the road towards you with machetes, but they are all for work, not for murder. You´ll be fine.

Don´t know about shark attacks, I don´t surf. But I do scuba dive in CR and I have never heard anyone mention that there is a rash of shark attacks there. I think you´re all right.

I agree with Piecar, just use common sense and stay alert.. The surfing is great there and just ask the locals about the sharks.. They are around but your surfing, what do you expect.. Also I with the time that you have I would highly recommend heading down to Panama for a week. It is a great country. It is safe, the people are friendly, and it is not nearly as touristy...

Places of concern are Jaco Beach & area, San Jose itself not all that interesting anyway, and Limon (no one stays there and you'll soon see why).

Not much for Sharks anywhere except for the time share salesman variety.
