Now thats a good idea! Probably not legal but if you just use it for ATM withdrawals.........??!!

Your father could probably open a joint account with you. This would have both you and your father's name on the account. That would allow Nationwide to have the security of knowing that someone with a decent credit will cover any issues, and also allow you to build up a credit score by having your name on an account.

Quoting wanderitch

Yeah somebody else recommended doing the exact same thing. That will be the next thing I will try. Only, after being refused Nationwide my credit score will have taken a further hit. Fingers crossed if not I will have to do what bwiiian said and carry large amounts of cash, only problem there is they only let you draw a certain amount out so I will have to get that increased.

Or does anyone know if its legal to get my Dad to open an acount that I use for my trip then pass it back to him or close the account?

You could get your dad to do that and then once it is set up you can get your dad to add you as a joint account holder. That way if anything happens with your card you won't need to call the UK your dad can just do it for you.

I would say to make an appointment with a Financial Advisor with Nationwide and go through everything and see if there is anything you can do to increase your credit rating. Our first ever mortgage advisor told us things to do to get our credit rating up because we are the same as you - we have no debts or credit cards. Sometimes it's as simple as making sure you are on the electoral register - just because you get a voting card through doesn't mean you are on the register, you have to go to your local electoral register department and physically sign up. This will improve your rating straight away because you can be 'found'...the Financial Advisor will be able to tell you other things too. Ignore what the woman in the branch told you and go to the advisor, he/she will be able to help you.

THATS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stupid me, I have done that before, i don't know why I didn't mention it. I have opened an account before and and given it to someone travelling another country (a VERY good friend, my girlfriend, that I can trust!!) who couldn't get a bank account and they just used my card. They put the money in before they went and there you have it!! It is a solution that does work. When your dad opens the account he can just say he is going to be abroad a lot so an ATM wont steal the card once you are in a foreign country, which can happen if you don't notify the bank before you go. But there is nothing whatsoever illegal about this. Sorted!

I have recently discovered that the nationwide cashcard can be used for free withdrawals abroad. Even though I was told it couldn't on two different occassions in the Nationwide branch in Blackburn.

I'm fuming. I leave a week on Monday and so I might not have time to get one now and the operator on the phone said as I had been refused the visa debit I might not be allowed to get a cash card but they applied for the wrong thing. I said I wanted the card to get the free cash withdrawals.

I went back into the branch at lunchtime and explained to the girl that the card can be used abroad, still she protested. She said well my colleague has worked here ten years and even she thinks it cant be used abroad.

I filled out the application form and gave it back to the girl, as I did the branch manager was nearby so I asked her if she could clear up the questions regarding the account and why the staff seem to think it cant be used abroad. Instead of answering the question she asked if I had another bank account and when I said yes she said well you cant have an account here. So because I asked a question she decided to play little hitler and I imagine tore up my application form for the card. I really can't believe what I have witnessed in Blackburns branch of Nationwide. I must add that I was very civil throughout despite my frustrations i didnt get angry or raise my voice. Everybody I know has more than one account. Is it illegal? Or a grey area where they exercise when they feel like it? Not sure what to do next.

Certainly not illegal to have multiple bank accounts, however a bank isn't obligated to open an account for you.

I would try another branch.

If that doesn't work, you might want to see if your bank will give you free withdrawls abroad. I have a plan with HSBC that includes free international withdrawls. Of course, I pay for the plan, but it includes other things that are worthwhile (like free travel insurance, etc.).

I'm with Natwest and they don't offer the facility. I will try the Manchester Branch. Its going to be too late for me to receive the card now though so if it does come I will need to get it posted to Thailand somewhere. I've no idea how I will organise that.

He applied for an account and they keeep saying they will call him to let him no if he has been accepted but they havent done. Last time he spoke to an operator he was cut off.

I have also been a victim of a good credit rating! If you have no debt then you don't exist apparently! Also don't get married and change your surname because then you are definitely going to rip the bank off thousands! I was fuming because I earn more than my husband he got a $6000 limit on the card we had chosen for traveling and I got $1000! How rude! we're going to pre-load it anyway but its the principle of the thing!
good luck wander, i hate those last minute disasters!
