Me and my girlfriend are planning a holiday of a lifetime to North America in September 2009. We have 7/8 weeks.
Thinking of flying into Vancouver and then making my way down to San Francisco, San jose and tracking right across America to and flying home from New York. Becuase I am under the age of 25, I can get a 30 day train pass for about £220 pound. So my question is, how good are the trains in the states? Is it alot, to think i could track across America by train in 7 weeks or would I be safer get internal flights? Thought about hiring a car....but it’s very expensive and not sure what it is like driving over there?
Where is good to see? Would you advise to do route66? How much are motels per night? (don’t want to get ripped off)
Any feedback would be great!! Thanks for reading my post and happy new year!!!
I am from the east coast and the train system here is fine, I have found it to be a bit expensive though. As far as travel on the west coast or coast to coast I have no idea.. I would check a few flights before you commit to the train pass. The driving here is fine so I would not worry about that. Motels: if you are not in a major tourist place, city, or national park you could get by for around $60. In the expensive areas there may be hostels but check site like hotels.com. Sometimes you could get a good hotel if you simply look.
As far as where to go, it depends what your into. More cities, Parks and hiking, Culture, festivals. It all depends. If you let people on this site know what your into you will get better information..
Hey, thanks for the reply!! Was to see the Cities, but mainly interested in scenery, mountains, walks, wildlife, beaches the sea, sports....as you take it i want to see all. Hahaha!!
Do you think 7 weeks is enough to get across the America?? Yes i will look into internal flights!! Is there any good airlines or sites to use??
There are a few airlines that fly to select locations.. They are SouthWest and JetBlue. I would check these websites and see what flights you could possibly get. If you book early and travel mid-week you should get great deals... 7 weeks should allow you to see a lot. I did a road trip from NYC to Utah and rock climbed for about 2 weeks then drove home, that was about 3 weeks.. You will have time but the cities are expensive so you will have to book things in advance and stick more to a schedule than you would normally. Let me know if there is any other info you would like please let me know.
