I don't understand this.

Do you have a sponsor in Germany, somebody who wrote you a formal invitation and went to the foreigner's office to sign a declaration of liability? If yes, don't worry about money.

Or are you travelling with somebody else, and you pay for the trip?

how much funds should I be showing in my savings/ checking account approximately ?

You need a minimum of 50 EUR per day and person, plus some extra money for the flight ticket and emergencies. So if you are travelling alone for two weeks I think they'll ask that you have approx. 2000 USD in your bank account.

Hi Maria..

Thanks for your replies..
no ..no one is going to sponsor for my trip.
i will be traveling by myself..and I will pay for my trip.
I posted this question..cos I was wondering why the embassy asks for a bank statement ..
i assume that they look if I have enough funds to sponsor for my trip..
so do they look for a minimum amount in the bank account...?
you answered my question..
thanks again ..

Also ..can you please advice on the below ..
- proof of group travel/hotel reservation/airline reservation and one copy

how can i buy a tour or airline reservation even before getting the visa..?

a friend of mine (staying in US..actually from Germany) said that she can give an informal invitation letter....

will that suffice this requirement ?

Yes, but they also check whether you got a regular income like from a job.

They need to make sure you are not coming to Germany for work.

Also ..can you please advice on the below ..

Airline reservation is relatively easy, you go to a travel agency and reserve a return plane ticket to Germany. The travel agency will charge you a small fee and they will hold your plane ticket to Germany for you for a short amount of time. They will give you confirmation of your reservation, which you should include in your application. You pay for the ticket later when you got the visa.

Use your friends offer to write you an informal letter of invitation. S/He should attach a photocopy of her Personalausweis to this letter.

If they do not accept that letter of invitation contact hotels and hostels. Reserve rooms and beds with them via email and if they confirm use the email you got from them for the visa application.

www.hostelworld.com can also be a good way to do this.

Essentially the Germans ask you to pay for everything in advance, because they want to make sure you are really a tourist. Stupid and really annoying, but you can try to work your way around it with the tips above.

I have twice applied for Schengen visa at the German Embassy as i find the staff at the Mumbai office very friendly and helpful:)

They strictly look for the following things:

1. Income Tax returns for the last 3 years
2. Bank Statement
3. Travel insurance
4. Air ticket
5. Hotel/hostel booking for the number days for which visa is required
6. If ur employed, it helps if u obtain an undertaking from your employer stating that u work with them and u have been granted leave for that period and u intend to report back to work on the specified date

Regarding sufficiency of funds i believe u should have a minimum monthly income of Rs 20,000 and try to include as many Asset documents u have (like Shares/property/etc).
