Disney Land in Anaheim (outside of LA) and Universal Studios in LA are probably the biggest and most well known. Sea World in San Diego is well known, and you might also want to check out the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Up in the bay area near SF, I don't think there is quite anything that matches those, but there is a Great America in Santa Clara, about 1 hour south of San Francisco.

When you decide which parks to go to, check online about buying tickets. It could save you a lot of money instead of buying them at the gate.

In my opinion "Six Flags" near LA is the best theme park.
More rollar coasters than you can shake a stick at, truly AWESOME!!!

Defo recommend looking online for tickets, i got much better prices on Universal and Disney tickets online, plus i didnt have to queue when i got there.

For waterparks, try "Raging Waters"

if there is a six flags close by go there.

the one in Jersey is pretty awesome, I can't imagine it's much different from the other ones. get one of those things that bumps you up to the front of the line otherwise you could stand in line for over two hours for one ride.

oh one thing to note. before you go to one of the parks, look at soda cans in stores. 99.99999% of the time coca-cola or pepsi has a soda with a buy one ticket get one free deal going on at a lot of major water parks and theme parks. It's an easy way to save heaps of money. I don't know anyone who has ever gone to one of these parks with out an empty soda can.
