Travel Forums North America I NEED SOME HEEELLLPP!!!

This is going to take some time to explain..so I thank you for taking some time to read it. :)

My friends and I are planning a trip to Chicago this March.
The trouble is, we're students...We're going to do this on a pretty tight budget, with each of us (4 are going for sure, one is pending) willing to contribute 200-300 dollars, and I'm willing to contribute as much as I can to pay for hotels. So, if my math is any good, that means we will have anywhere from $800-$1500) This is a ridiculously small amount of money, but if all goes well it should work. (we sort of did a whole budget thing).

Here's what I need help with:
I tried to call Travelocity but the woman on the phone barely spoke English....
Anyway, Our trip is going to span 10 days: 2 days in Nashville, 5 days in Chicago, and 2 days in Champagne, Illinois. The last day will be dedicated to driving home.
Is there a method to get a really good discount on hotels? We are all going to stay in one room at each hotel, and we don't mind how crappy the hotel/motel/hostel is...it's not like we're spending the whole time in our room.
Perhaps I can call the hotels individually? Or is there some other website I can go to that will be of better help?

This is our first roadtrip and we really have no Idea what we are doing...We can only speculate and figure things out. There really is no experience in the group as far as trip planning goes.

SO...

If anyone has ANY advice, tips, ANYTHING....Please don't hesitate to post a reply. Again, thank you so much to everyone!!

just google "hostels in chicago." hostels will save you a ton of money and you and your friends will probably book up a whole room for yourself.

I would suggest staying away from the mainstream travel services. try kayak.com for cheap flights of just greyhound it from a ear by city, getting there is the hardest part. after that everything is easy. good luck!

Check out the TP Wiki pages for Chicago. Several of the hostels are listed on the main page along with the different EL lines (elevated train system) and links to the CTA for getting around. The J. Ira & Nicki Harris Family Hostel is located in the south loop area and is quite popular. It is surrounded by the Columbia University buildings. Also - check out the CTA site for finding easy methods of getting around the city cheaply as they have several different types of CTA passes.

We have used www.quikbook.com for booking accommodations within the city. They were very good and even the hotels had glowing things to say about their services.

Have a great time!
