Where Should I Go?

Travel Forums General Talk Where Should I Go?

Looking at three weeks trip starting late November till around December 21.
Using my QANTAS frequent flyer points, I can get return flights to -

Beijing
Buenos Aires
Colombo
Delhi
Ho Chi Minh City
Honolulu
Johannesburg
Manila
Los Angeles
Mumbai
Nadi (Fiji)
Noumea (New Caledonia)
Port Vila (Vanuatu)
Santiago
Seoul
Shanghai
Taipei
Tokyo

Which one would you choose taking climate, etc into consideration?, and why?

Can you fly into Buenos Aires and out of Santiago? If so then the weather in Argentina in late November - December is perfect. You can do BsAs, (if yo can fit it in I would also suggest up to Iguazu Falls) then across to Cordoba, Salta and Mendoza then over to Santiago for your flight back.

It's excellent to travel overland in Argentina, the buses are like first class airline seats with food on board. Argenina also has great food and cheap, good quality wine and beer and a good standard of accommodation. It's a perfect 3 week itinerary without having to rush too much.

Wow!!! What a choice.. I don't know how I would choose but it would be a great problem to have. I think though I would choose Honolulu as it is so far away from anything and probably one of the last places I would get to go to. So if I had a free flight I would go there (although I am of course talking as someone from the UK). There is still something quite romantic about going to Hawaii. 2nd choice would be Fiji, but as you are from Australia i expect you wanna go further afield than that. Last on my list would be LA. Apart from that it would take me forever to decide an order of what ones I would go to. In fact I have only ever been to 1 on your list - Manila.

I'm sorely disappointed with QANTAS on this one - they didn't include Chicago or Milwaukee in that list. Since the closest I've been to any of them are Panama City and San Diego, I'm just going to go off in some corner and pout. ;)

I pity you and Mrs. Anthony having to make this difficult decision. It's a brutal one. Maybe you should stay home and ask for the cash equivalent instead. At least I wouldn't feel so alone in not traveling anywhere for the next 10 years... Just my way of being helpful in this agonizingly hard decision-making process. Okay - try this... Throw a dart at the world map. Whichever of those destinations is closest to the dart - go there.

Cheer to wherever you end up and send a post card!! ;)

Don't be. Surely the blame is solely on Wotthefigh here. It's not Quantas's fault that he hasn't travelled enough to earn the points to get to Milwaukee, much though i'm sure it would be his number 1 choice to take a trip to Isa Manor if he had the points.

I would probably ignore the Pacific islands (on the theory they are closer and potentially easier to get to at a later date, though I know there are holes in that logic). Of the places listed, from personal experience in Nov/Dec, I enjoyed Shanghai and Beijing at that time of year, though especially the later can get a bit nippy, whilst Seoul was miserable in winter (to my mind) and ditto Tokyo to a point. HCMC is roughly the same year round, though it can be surprisingly miserable/wet/cloudy in the North of Vietnam which may work against you if you wanted to do a trip through Vietnam.

I like the idea of a round trip in/out of BA and Santiago and would also put in a shout for Jo'burg (never been), as from what i've heard that can be a damned good time to be wandering around South Africa.

Oh, do I sense a bit of cynicism in that comment?? Who wouldn't want to visit the frigid-up -to-our-asses-in-snow-Middle-Of-Nowhere at the end of November to the end of December?? Please - perfect weather for those who live in 40C during the winter. It's not my fault Anthony is a puppy and wants to stay warm. We've gotten 4 5-star reviews from the 4 TPers who have visited. That's as good as any run-down 5 star hotel could ask for...

Okay, Isa returns this to it's originally scheduled topic while she goes off to pout some more. Sadly, it will be a snow bank as it's not warm in Middle-Of-Nowhere...

Weather is supposed to be nice in Western and Southwestern India during this time. Rest of the year you just get roasted alive. So my vote goes for Mumbai.

Oddly - and probably surprisingly - no. That was a genuine comment. If he did have enough free miles to come to Isa Manor, i'm sure he would seriously consider it, though, admittedly, it possibly isn't the best time of year to visit in terms of weather (for those strange people that aren't used to snow, minus many temperatures and eyeballs freezing when you blink). I now return to the regularly scheduled topic

Thought-provoking responses.
Anywhere cold is out as far as my wife is concerned, so North Asia is dropped.
She doesn't fancy Manila and is very wary of India and Sri Lanka.

1) Isa Manor would have to come first on the list save that I do prefer travelling O/S where the natives speak at least some form of pidgin English so that leaves Illinois out
2) Checked out availability of Joburg with QANTAS. Can get in on freq flyers late Nov but can only get back to Perth arriving Xmas day with freq flyers as there are probably lots of South Africans coming here to visit family (Perth is favourite place for SA migrants) late December. Otherwise it's $1,600 each one way Joburg - Perth to get home to cook the turkey!!!
Bloody South Africans. Whipped our ass in the cricket then they take up all the plane seats
3) I was thinking Hawaii (bwiiian). Loved it last time back in 83 but the missus spent 3 days there last June on her way to Kentucky so she won't give that the nod.
4) South Amerique (loubylou) certainly appeals. We loved Argentina in 2005 (BA, Iguazu and Mendoza were fantastic) and the idea of Salta then into Bolivia for Uyuni looks good. I enjoyed San Pedro de Atacama. Will check with the airline about ins and outs. Lan Chile is a member of OneWorld so could probably get to BA then fly back out of Santiago.
5) We had 3 weeks in Vietnam back in 2002? and LOVED it. Did most spots (Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi, Halong and Sapa). Might go back to Ho Chi Minh City (via Sydney unfortunately) then Mekong Delta then Phu Quoc island then boat up into Cambodia to Phom Phen and Angor Wat and back to Saigon for flight home.

RESULT

South America or Vietnam/Cambodia, though that could change.

Thanks for all your replies.

Anthony
